Excerpt from Lyrical Forms in English: Edited, With Introduction and Notes, for the Use of Schools With so many excellent school-collections of lyrics already in existence, the publication of still another may seem to some superfluous, if not, indeed, impertinent. If such be the case, the aim and plan of this volume must serve as its apology, for the writer is unacquainted with any other selection of lyrical poetry designed to provide material for what seems to be a recent and distinctive method in the teaching of English literature. The days are happily past when the study of literature in our schools meant the study of its history; when our pupils were required to engage in the unprofitable task of learning to associate the titles of some hundreds of books with the names of their authors and the dates of their publication; when it was of more importance to know that Sir John Suckling wrote The Goblins than to have felt the inspiration in a poem by Wordsworth or to have known the poetic richness of a line by Keats. The Short Lyric Poems Of Jean Froissart written by Kristen Mossler Figg and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-06-26 with Literary Collections categories.

Originally published in 1994, The Short Lyric Poems of Jean Froissart is a meticulous reading of the important but generally neglected short lyric poems of Jean Froissart. The book situates Froissart within the cultural and literary context of fourteenth-century Europe and examines a representative number of his lyric forms (pastourelles, chansons royales, ballades, virelais, and rondeaux) demonstrating their richness of theme and poetic virtuosity. The book provides a readable and reliable English translation, making it possible for English scholars unfamiliar with the original Middle French forms to understand and appreciate the influence Froissart had on Chaucer and other authors of the age. The book focuses on themes, techniques, meters, and rhythms that Froissart employed in his poetry, on how his poetry fits poetic tradition, and on the place of Froissart in literary history.

Christopher Smart S English Lyrics written by Rosalind Powell and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-05-23 with Literary Criticism categories.

In the first full-length study of Christopher Smart’s translations and the place and function of translation in Smart’s poetry, Rosalind Powell proposes a new approach to understanding the relationship between Smart’s poetics and his practice. Drawing on translation theory from the early modern period to the present day, this book addresses Smart's translations of Horace, Phaedrus and the Psalms alongside the better-known religious works such as Jubilate Agno and A Song to David. Five recurrent threads run throughout Powell’s study: the effect of translation on the identity of a narrative voice in a rewritten text; the techniques that are used to present translated texts to a new literary, cultural and linguistic readership; performance and reading contexts; the translation of great works as an attempt to achieve literary permanence; and, finally, the authorial influence of Smart himself in terms of the overt religiosity and nationalism that he champions in his writing. In exploring Smart’s major translation projects and revisiting his original poems, Powell offers insights into classical reception and translation theory; attitudes towards censorship; expressions of nationalism in the period; developments in liturgy and hymnody; and the composition of children’s books and school texts in the early modern era. Her detailed analysis of Smart’s translating poetics places them within a new, contemporary context and locality to uncover the poet's works as a coherent project of Englishing.
