It focuses on Māyā's identification with the divine feminine and analyses its relationship with other key concepts in the text, such as human suffering, devotion, and divine play.

This exploration of key terms related to social and political order, found in early Indian texts, challenges the idea of a unified ancient India and a unified national identity at that time. This collection explores what may be called the idea of India in ancient times. Its undeclared objective is to identify key concepts which show early Indian civilization as distinct and differently oriented from other formations. The essays focus on ancient Indian texts within a variety of genres. They identify certain key terms—such as janapada, desa, var?a, dharma, bh?va—in their empirical contexts to suggest that neither the ideas embedded in these terms nor the idea of Bharatavarsha as a whole are “given entities,” but that they evolved historically. Professor Chattopadhyaya examines these texts to unveil historical processes. Without denying comparative history, he stresses that the internal dynamics of a society are best decoded via its own texts. His approach bears very effectively on understanding ongoing interactions between India’s “Great Tradition” and “Little Traditions.” As a whole, this book is critical of the notion of overarching Indian unity in the ancient period. It punctures the retrospective thrust of hegemonic nationalism as an ideology that has obscured the diverse textures of Indian civilization. Renowned for his scholarship on the ancient Indian past, Professor Chattopadhyaya’s latest collection only consolidates his high international reputation.

Text And Tradition In South India written by Velcheru Narayana Rao and has been published by SUNY Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-06-01 with Literary Criticism categories.

Essays on Telugu and South Indian literature and culture by distinguished Telugu scholar Narayana Rao. Velcheru Narayana Rao’s contribution to understanding Indian cultural history, literary production, and intellectual life—specifically from the vantage of the Andhra region—has few parallels. He is one of the very rare scholars to be able to reflect magisterially on the precolonial and colonial periods. He moves easily between Sanskrit and the vernacular traditions, and between the worlds of orality and script. This is because of his mastery of the “classical” Telugu tradition. As Sanjay Subrahmanyam puts it in his Introduction, “To command nearly a thousand years of a literary tradition is no small feat, but more important still is VNR’s ability constantly to offer fresh readings and provocative frameworks for interpretation.” The essays and reflections in Text and Tradition in South India bring together the diverse and foundational contributions made by Narayana Rao to the rewriting of India’s cultural and literary history. The book is for anyone interested in the history of Indian ideas, the social and cultural history of South India, and the massive intellectual traditions of the subcontinent.

To know Religion is to know Truth, for that is its basis. And who knows the Truth? Those who have realized It through the unique and specific ways and means leading to It. The enlightened souls and the honest oral and written records they left behind should become the recourse of the wise seeker. Such a seeker hears the Truth contained within the nondual revealed scriptures, then gets the transmission of Truth directly from a realized soul, then practices intensely with dedication and perseverence to realize that Truth. This triple combination produces sages and seers. Reading a few books; giving a few talks; leading a few classes on relationships; fasting, dieting, breathing, and posturing the body; fascination with occult powers; indulging all the many modes of pretended spirituality; intellectual study devoid of any direct experience — when did any of these ever produce an authentic luminary?
