The novel opens in an hotel in the Algerian city of Biskra. A dance is being held, hosted by Diana Mayo and her brother. La saggistica ha dissezionato ogni aspetto della sua vita, nessuno però aveva mai trattato la parabola di Mussolini e del fascismo come se si trattasse di un romanzo. Un romanzo – e questo è il punto cruciale – in cui d’inventato non c’è nulla. Lui è come una bestia: sente il tempo che viene. Lo fiuta. E quel che fiuta è un’Italia sfinita, stanca della casta politica, della democrazia in agonia, dei moderati inetti e complici. Allora lui si mette a capo degli irregolari, dei delinquenti, degli incendiari e anche dei “puri”, i più fessi e i più feroci. Lui in un rapporto di Pubblica Sicurezza del 1919 è descritto come “intelligente, di forte costituzione, benché sifilitico, sensuale, emotivo, audace, facile alle pronte simpatie e antipatie, ambiziosissimo, al fondo sentimentale”. Lui è Benito Mussolini, ex leader socialista cacciato dal partito, agitatore politico indefesso, direttore di un piccolo giornale di opposizione. Sarebbe un personaggio da romanzo se non fosse l’uomo che più d’ogni altro ha marchiato a sangue il corpo dell’Italia. Non è inventato nulla del dramma di cui qui si compie il primo atto fatale, tra il 1919 e il 1925: nulla di ciò che Mussolini dice o pensa, nulla dei protagonisti – D’Annunzio, Margherita Sarfatti, un Matteotti stupefacente per il coraggio come per le ossessioni che lo divorano – né della pletora di squadristi, Arditi, socialisti, anarchici che sembrerebbero partoriti da uno sceneggiatore in stato di sovreccitazione creativa. Il risultato è un romanzo documentario impressionante non soltanto per la sterminata quantità di fonti a cui l’autore attinge, ma soprattutto per l’effetto che produce. Fatti dei quali credevamo di sapere tutto, una volta illuminati dal talento del romanziere, producono una storia che suona inaudita e un’opera senza precedenti nella letteratura italiana.
