"The first time someone tried to kill me, I was four years old." Thus begins the true crime memoir of a woman who survived a serial killer. Most scholars, psychologists, and law enforcement officers concentrate on researching male serial killers, especially the ones they term "sexual predators," like Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacy, and Jeffrey Dahmer. It's been discovered, however, that female serial killers are infinitely more successful and dangerous than their male counterparts. Female serial killers are less flashy, less flamboyant, more patient, and tend to kill in ways that are rarely detected as murder. Also, female serial killers tend to murder people known to them, rather than the strangers that male sexual predators seek out. Black Widow serial killers usually murder husbands, lovers, boyfriends, children, and even boarders for insurance proceeds, inheritance money, or Social Security checks. Medeas kill their children to punish their ex-husbands or to otherwise manipulate the men in their lives. Angels of Death kill those who are dependent upon their care - in hospitals, nursing homes, or in private care - often murdering them with drugs or in ways that are undetected by medical examination. Team Killers work with partners or operate in a group, often blaming other team members for all the violence and killing. The most dangerous female serial killers are the women who viciously abuse, torture, and often kill their own children, children in their care, or others who are entirely dependent upon them. Posing as ideal mothers and self-less caregivers, these female serial killers practice Munchausen's by Proxy (MBP), an incurable personality disorder where the woman intentionally and repeatedly sickens, injures, tortures, abuses, and kills her victims in order to get attention, respect, admiration, and love for herself. Often called "Munchers" by those in law enforcement and the medical establishment who eventually discover the terrible truth behind the illnesses, injuries, and deaths of the children and others in their care, women who practice Munchausen's by Proxy are the most dangerous of all serial killers because they operate openly, virtually flaunting their crimes while appearing, at the same time, to be completely and unquestionably innocent. They are the serial killers next door. 2nd Edition: formatting changes and expanded Index.

La Clase Mágica: Imagining Optimal Possibilities in a Bilingual Community of Learners vividly captures the social and intellectual developments and the promises of an ongoing after-school project called La Clase Mágica. It is a blow-by-blow description of the early transformations of a project that began as an educational activity and slowly but deliberately turned into a social action project whose aim was to serve those with low economic and political means and little access to educational resources. This multivocal account details research in action for effectively serving Spanish-English bilingual speakers from a Mexican origin community, as well as--on a broader level--the diverse populations that increasingly characterize American society today. The focus is on the early foundational work of the project between 1989-1996, though attention is also given to the national and international recognition the project has subsequently received, the college-going patterns of its long-term participants, and the transplantation of the project to other cultural communities. The book speaks out from the "zones of contact" between the university and a language minority community about new ways to extend and intersect theory and practice in many areas of the educational enterprise. Contact is defined not only in the physical sense of face-to-face interaction but also as symbolic interaction between languages, cultures, histories, and epistemologies. Thus, Vásquez speaks of optimal possibilities situated in the middle grounds, or more technically speaking, in the borders between Spanish and English, Mexican and mainstream culture, minority and majority designations, and between school and community contexts where contact is made and new arrangements are imagined. This account uses the reflections of participants at times to take readers from the scientific to the everyday, to make real and concrete the theoretical conceptualizations that box in human behavior. In this way, it defines the theories, methods, and philosophies for linking multiple disciplines, institutions, and participant groups into a concerted effort with potential to reframe the educational opportunities of under-served populations. A close look is provided into the intricacies and the fundamental principles for building and sustaining effective learning environments and institutional relations necessary for enhancing the potential of learners of all ages. In the process, the book also suggests ways in which community members and institutional agents can play an active and integral role in creating learning opportunities that serve both constituencies. Educators and policymakers will find the systems approach for pursuing parent and community involvement in the educational enterprise useful. In sum, the book offers researchers, practitioners, and policymakers much needed guidance, insight, and perhaps inspiration for rethinking educational goals and objectives.

In a far corner of the Island of Serendipity stood the poorest of poor castles. Everything was poor including the villagers who lived inside. No matter how poor, the villagers took the greatest of pride in the baking and selling of muffins Every morning, villagers loaded them onto their only wagon and went from village to village selling all the muffins. One day there appeared at the castle a great and monstrous dragon—a muffin-munching dragon. With crumbs still on his face from the muffins he'd eaten at the last castle he'd visited, the dragon came waddling down the hill, right up to the drawbridge. From the smell of things, this was a perfect place for a muffin-munching dragon to live. From that day forward, he ate all of the muffins. With no muffins to sell, the castle folk had no money to buy supplies to bake more muffins. All would have ended here had they not all learned to work together. A delightful tale about simple economics.

My Beautiful Idol written by Pete Gall and has been published by Zondervan this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-05-26 with Religion categories.

The author of My Beautiful Idol is on a quest to be successful—in a lucrative job at an advertising agency, in ministry work, even in his relationships. And in a futile attempt to control the sources of love and security, he has turned these things into idols he can keep in his soul's back pocket. He pulls the idols out when he feels vulnerable and defenseless, and hides them again when things are going well. But the idols keep failing—even when he turns to his own Christian faith. In a creative narrative style rooted in raw honesty, My Beautiful Idol invites readers to identify with the young would-be Christian hero as he seeks God, and as he hides from God. Far from reducing complex matters to simplistic formulas, Pete Gall weaves together stories both sublime and wretched, ego-building and humbling, humorous and painful, and successfully celebrates the messiness of faith, the importance of validating truth, and the unscripted nature of experiencing a God who is intimately involved in all of life.
