Pp. 69-126 contain the wartime memoirs of Abraham Deutsch (1902-1992), Chief Rabbi of Limoges between 1939-45, with an introduction by Simon Schwarzfuchs (p. 63-67). The introductory essay by Pascal Plas (p. 13-59), "Limoges, le rabbin Deutsch, 40-45", places the personal memoirs in historical context. Pp. 39-59 describe Rabbi Deutsch's social and political activities during the Shoah. When persecutions began in 1942, he took an active role in encouraging Jews to hide, and worked to liberate prisoners, or at least ease their conditions in the camp in Nexon. His efforts were hampered by ever stricter anti-Jewish measures following the German occupation in late 1942. In 1943 Deutsch was arrested for a while. Later, he represented the local OSE children's homes vis-à-vis the Vichy regime. He insisted on taking the children out of the homes, and helped them to safety through the Garel rescue network. His activity in the resistance included opening his office and home to illegal meetings and providing false IDs. In 1944 Deutsch was arrested a second time and liberated only when the Maquis entered the camp in Eyjeaux. After the war he became Chief Rabbi of Strasbourg and Bas-Rhin. Pp. 129-149 contain testimonies collected by Michel Kiener.

Accounts of significant sites in Hungary, Vichy France, Italy, and other nations, part of the multi-volume reference praised as a “staggering achievement” (Jewish Daily Forward). This third volume in the monumental seven-volume encyclopedia, prepared by the Jack, Joseph, and Morton Mandel Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, offers a comprehensive account of camps and ghettos in, or run by, Croatia, Hungary, Italy, Romania, Bulgaria, Slovakia, and Vichy France (including North Africa). Each entry discusses key events in the history of the ghetto; living and working conditions; activities of the Jewish Councils; Jewish responses to persecution; demographic changes; and details of the ghetto’s liquidation. Personal testimonies help convey the character of each ghetto, while source citations provide a guide to additional information. Documentation of hundreds of smaller sites—previously unknown or overlooked in the historiography of the Holocaust—make this an indispensable reference work on the destroyed Jewish communities of Eastern Europe.

Re Examining The Holocaust Through Literature written by Aukje Kluge and has been published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-03-26 with History categories.

In the late 1980s, Holocaust literature emerged as a provocative, but poorly defined, scholarly field. The essays in this volume reflect the increasingly international and pluridisciplinary nature of this scholarship and the widening of the definition of Holocaust literature to include comic books, fiction, film, and poetry, as well as the more traditional diaries, memoirs, and journals. Ten contributors from four countries engage issues of authenticity, evangelicalism, morality, representation, personal experience, and wish-fulfillment in Holocaust literature, which have been the subject of controversies in the US, Europe, and the Middle East. Of interest to students and instructors of antisemitism, national and comparative literatures, theater, film, history, literary criticism, religion, and Holocaust studies, this book also contains an extensive bibliography with references in over twenty languages which seeks to inspire further research in an international context.

The Holocaust S Jewish Calendars written by Alan Rosen and has been published by Indiana University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-02-28 with Religion categories.

“The most comprehensive to date treatment of these precious artifacts of the Holocaust’s Jewish efforts to maintain religious observations and identity.” —Choice Calendars map time, shaping and delineating our experience of it. While the challenges to tracking Jewish conceptions of time during the Holocaust were substantial, Alan Rosen reveals that many took great risks to mark time within that vast upheaval. Rosen inventories and organizes Jewish calendars according to the wartime settings in which they were produced—from Jewish communities to ghettos and concentration camps. The calendars he considers reorient views of Jewish circumstances during the war and show how Jews were committed to fashioning traditional guides to daily life, even in the most extreme conditions. In a separate chapter, moreover, he elucidates how Holocaust-era diaries sometimes served as surrogate Jewish calendars. All in all, Rosen presents a revised idea of time, continuity, the sacred and the mundane, the ordinary and the extraordinary even when death and destruction were the order of the day. Rosen’s focus on the Jewish calendar—the ultimate symbol of continuity, as weekday follows weekday and Sabbath follows Sabbath—sheds new light on how Jews maintained connections to their way of conceiving time even within the cauldron of the Holocaust. “Rosen demonstrates the relationship between time and meaning, between meaning and holiness, between holy days and the divine presence―all of which came under assault in the Nazis’ effort to kill Jewish souls before destroying Jewish bodies.” —David Patterson, author of Along the Edge of Annihilation: The Collapse and Recovery of Life in the Holocaust Diary
