Die Entwicklung von der Industrie- zur Dienstleistungsgesellschaft, die Emanzipation der Frau, Patchworkfamilien und alleinerziehende Eltern seien hier nur als Beispiele der gesellschaftlichen Änderungen genannt. Diese führen dazu, dass Männer sich mit einem veränderten Umfeld und neuen Anforderungen konfrontiert sehen, was das männliche Selbstbild stark ins Wanken bringt. Früher galt der Mann als Ernährer, der sich in erster Linie über seine Arbeit definierte. Das Wegfallen dieser ursprünglichen Rollendefinition kann sowohl verunsichernd als auch befreiend wirken, da die entstandene Lücke bislang durch kein neues Männerbild geschlossen worden ist. Männer müssen sich folglich nicht mehr an Rollenvorgaben halten: Ehemals Frauen vorbehaltene Themen wie Gesund-heitsbewusstsein, Mode sowie Körperpflege und Kosmetik erobern zunehmend die Männerwelt. Vor dem Hintergrund dieser Entwicklungen soll die vorliegende Diplomarbeit Einsichten in die Verwendung und das Markenbewusstsein von Männern in Bezug auf kosmetische Produkte und Maßnahmen ermöglichen. Dabei steht aber nicht nur Kosmetik im Mittelpunkt, die speziell auf die Zielgruppe der Männer ausgerichtet ist, sondern es soll vielmehr das gesamte Spektrum der von Männern verwendeten kosmetischen Produkte beleuchtet werden. Außerdem sind die männlichen Einstellungen zu Kosmetik und zur Kosmetikverwendung zentraler Gegenstand der Arbeit. Hierzu gehören auch die Einstellungen zum eigenen Aussehen sowie zum Erscheinungsbild anderer Männer. Neben Sekundäranalysen soll ein zweistufiger Untersuchungsansatz, bestehend aus Intensivinterviews und einer Passantenbefragung, diesen Themen nachgehen.
