Since 1943 the personality and legend of General Juan Domingo Peron have towered over the Argentine Republic. Yet until 1930 Argentina was widely regarded as the best example of democracy and prosperity on a politically turbulent and economically underdeveloped continent. The present collection of articles by American and Argentine scholars examines the thirteen critical years that separated the "old" Argentina from the "new," and made possible the rise of one of the most powerful dictators in Latin America. In a little over a decade wracked by depression and war, political democracy in Argentina collapsed and the landed aristocracy was restored to power; the traditional relationship between the British and Argentine economies deteriorated and no satisfactory alternative was found; a generalized disillusionment and pessimism led to a fascination by intellectuals with authoritarian ideologies; a new "nationalistic" consciousness became increasingly evident in films, radio, and popular music; and social and demographic changes produced the constituency for a messianic populism. This volume thus identifies the symptoms that eventually resulted into the eleven year reign and twenty year cult of Peronismo, symptoms which strongly influence the course of events in present-day Argentina. Jorge Manrique was the greatest poet of fifteenth-century Castile and one of the three or four greatest in Spanish literature. Frank A. Domínguez offers here an introduction to Manrique's poetry and the first book-length study of him in English in fifty years. After presenting the biographical and historical context of Manrique's poetry, Domínguez examines the poet's love lyrics, describing the large fund of commonplaces and forms that Manrique's verses share with those of other poets of his age. Manrique's highly stylized language and parallel verse structures express the obsession of the lover with the beloved. Moreover, his attention to parallel construe the world's greatest. In treating the Coplas, Domínguez not only offers a sensitive reading of the elegy but also examines questions of text, structure, and style. Like the love lyrics, the Coplas present a high incidence of parallel structures that make for clarity and symmetry. Domínguez also finds that the complex stylistic relationships of the verses provide the Coplas with a unity that is deeper and more fundamental than has generally been perceived. This study, eclectic in its critical approaches, will be the standard English work on Manrique for years to come.

Critical Issues in International Financial Reform addresses weaknesses of the current international financial system and potential beneficial reforms. The focus is on the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean, but the authors also take into account relevant lessons from the experience of Canada, a country highly integrated into world and hemispheric trade and financial markets. Critical Issues offers a new perspective on a discussion too often dominated by interest groups that take strong, even rigid, positions on issues with limited understanding of the technical aspects of the issues, and little concern for the interests of the developing world. Its chapters have been written by experts in the economic, political, and social aspects of the international financial integration of developing countries. Financial crises and their associated social and economic traumas are the most apparent symptom that something is amiss in the process of world economic integration. But there are also broader questions about the nature and magnitude of the benefits and costs of increased international capital flows for different groups of countries in the developing and developed worlds. For example, even in the absence of turbulence, is it optimal for all participants that capital movements be as free as possible? Does capital inflow discourage domestic savings to a degree that should cause worry? Are some types of flows inherently more beneficial than others--for instance, direct investment flows versus flows into host stock markets? How can the instability of capital movements best be curtailed? These questions concern the contributors to this volume. This volume demonstrates that the evolution of the world financial system, its various problems, and what is or is not done about them require an understanding of the links among financial, economic, and political variables. This book examines regional structural challenges on Colombia’s path to sustainable social cohesion and regionally inclusive growth. Writers, editors, activists and prostitutes. Women along the US-Mexico border served in many more capacities than simply wives and mothers, though those were their primary roles. Historically, religion was the link between women and the written word. According to the editors of this volume, Mexican women—particularly those from the privileged classes—had access to secular reading beginning in the 1800s. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, several periodicals dedicated to the education of the “fairer sex” emerged. Though the male voice initially predominated, women began contributing poetry and essays to various publications and eventually became editors of their own magazines and newspapers. This collection of ten essays, based on the examination of publications from the US-Mexico region between 1850-1950, explores the role of women in print culture. Leading to a better understanding of women in the history of Mexican border life, the essays are organized in three thematic groupings: “Exploring the Archives: Women and Written Culture in Northeastern Mexico during the Late Nineteenth Century,” “The Cultural History of Women and Print Culture” and “A Transcultural View of Women and their Role as Activists in Northern Mexico and Texas.” The scholars who researched the archival collections of newspapers, magazines and other print matter write about a variety of topics, including the participation of women in the War of Independence (1810-1821) and the Mexican Revolution (1910-1920), the belief females were inferior and should not be educated outside the home and even the cultural history of prostitutes. Published as part of the Recovering the US Hispanic Literary Heritage project, this compendium of academic articles sheds light on women’s roles—especially as readers, writers and editors—in the Texas-Mexico border region in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
