This contemporary tragi-comedy written and directed by Pieter-Dirk Uys is built wildly and loosely on Shakespeare's Macbeth, and tells the story of the rise and fall of MacBeki, a talented and gifted leader who is corrupted by the silver tongues of three witches, an over-reaching wife and a crown that seems there for the taking ... Other characters include recognizable but entirely fictional finance ministers, first democratic presidents, ministers of defence, police and health and a range of various other failed ministries.

Playwright's note: The success of MacBeki has inspired yet another PDU assault on the legacy of the greatest English dramatist in history. William Shakespeare's The Merry Wives of Windsor is not gifted with as obvious a guide track to local political farce as Macbeth was. There the eternal struggle of power versus leadership, of lust versus love, of good versus interesting lent itself well to the drama being played out on our political road to the ANC 2007 Congress in Polokwane. That lead to the in-house coup that said a loud 'Ta Ta' to Thabo and the exit of President Mbeki. The universal enjoyment of MacBeki at the Market Theatre from a rainbow South African audience of all ages and political persuasions made a theatre piece inspired by the many wives of President Jacob Zuma inevitable. But not easy. The Merry Wives of Windsor is a comedy of bad manners including love and marriage, jealousy and revenge, social class and wealth, explored with irony, sexual innuendo, sarcasm and stereotypical views of classes and nationalities. The text of the The Merry Wives of Zuma, not just a local version of the Shakespeare opus, is grounded in what could be seen as a comedy of bad moves. It was conceived and structured on the long winding road to Mangaung - the December 2012 ANC Congress where, as in Polokwane, the next leader of the ANC is elected. If Jacob Zuma wins a second term and stays the country's president till 2014, this play will also win a new breath of topicality till that general election. If not, the story can still stand on its feet, as it is not essentially about Jacob Zuma and his four wives. It is about a town in South Africa like so many towns, adjusting to a new name and local government of the people by the people, but not necessarily for the people. The mayor and his town council manipulate the ups and downs of municipal corruptions and eruptions. There is the intrigue of lust and love, the chess game of marriage and morality, of greedy fads and garish fashions. A rainbow of vibrant emotions, which is also a comedy about serious issues: freedom, opinion, commitment, transparency and truth, all bundled together as political pantomime.

South Africa has a uniquely rich and diverse theatre tradition which has responded energetically to the country's remarkable transition, helping to define the challenges and contradictions of this young democracy. This volume considers the variety of theatre forms, and the work of the major playwrights and theatre makers producing work in democratic South Africa. It offers an overview of theatre pioneers and theatre forms in Part One, before concentrating on the work of individual playwrights in Part Two. Through its wide-ranging survey of indigenous drama written predominantly in the English language and the analysis of more than 100 plays, a detailed account is provided of post-apartheid South African theatre and its engagement with the country's recent history. Part One offers six overview chapters on South African theatre pioneers and theatre forms. These include consideration of the work of artists such as Barney Simon, Mbongeni Ngema, Phyllis Klotz; the collaborations of William Kentridge and the Handspring Puppet Company; the work of Magnet Theatre, and of physical and popular community theatre forms. Part Two features chapters on twelve major playwrights, including Athol Fugard, Reza de Wet, Lara Foot, Zakes Mda, Yaël Farber, Mpumelelo Paul Grootboom, Mike van Graan and Brett Bailey. It includes a survey of emerging playwrights and significant plays, and the book closes with an interview with Aubrey Sekhabi, the Artistic Director of the South African State Theatre in Pretoria. Written by a team of over twenty leading international scholars, The Methuen Drama Guide to Contemporary South African Theatre is a unique resource that will be invaluable to students and scholars from a range of different disciplines, as well as theatre practitioners.

Selves In Question written by Judith Lutge Coullie and has been published by University of Hawaii Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-05-31 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

Wide-ranging and engaging, Selves in Question considers the various ways in which auto/biographical accounts situate and question the self in contemporary southern Africa. The twenty-seven interviews presented here consider both the ontological status and the representation of the self. They remind us that the self is constantly under construction in webs of interlocution and that its status and representation are always in question. The contributors, therefore, look at ways in which auto/biographical practices contribute to placing, understanding, and troubling the self and selves in postcolonies in the current global constellation. They examine topics such as the contexts conducive to production processes; the contents and forms of auto/biographical accounts; and finally, their impact on the producers and the audience. In doing so they map out a multitude of variables--including the specific historical juncture, geo-political locations, social positions, cultures, languages, generations, and genders--in their relations to auto/biographical practices. Those interviewed include the famous and the hardly known, women and men, writers and performers who communicate in a variety of languages: Afrikaans, English, Xhosa, isiZulu, Sesotho, and Yiddish. An extensive introduction offers a general framework on the contestation of self through auto/biography, a historical overview of auto/biographical representation in South Africa up to the present time, an outline of theoretical and thematic issues at stake in southern Africa auto/biography, and extensive primary and secondary biographies. Interviewees: Breyten Breytenbach, Dennis Brutus, Valentine Cascarino, Vanitha Chetty, Wilfred Cibane, Greig Coetzee, J. M. At his 1994 inauguration, South African president Nelson Mandela announced the “Rainbow Nation, at peace with itself and the world.” This national rainbow notably extended beyond the bounds of racial coexistence and reconciliation to include “sexual orientation” as a protected category in the Bill of Rights. Yet despite the promise of equality and dignity, the new government’s alliance with neoliberal interests and the devastation of the AIDS epidemic left South Africa an increasingly unequal society. Prismatic Performances focuses on the queer embodiments that both reveal and animate the gaps between South Africa’s self-image and its lived realities. It argues that performance has become a key location where contradictions inherent to South Africa’s post-apartheid identity are negotiated. The book spans 30 years of cultural production and numerous social locations and includes: a team of black lesbian soccer players who reveal and redefine the gendered and sexed limitations of racialized “Africanness;” white gay performers who use drag and gender subversion to work through questions of racial and societal transformation; black artists across the arts who have developed aesthetics that place on display their audiences’ complicity in the problem of sexual violence; and a primarily heterosexual panAfrican online soap opera fandom community who, by combining new virtual spaces with old melodramatic tropes allow for extended deliberation and new paradigms through which African same-sex relationships are acceptable. Prismatic Performances contends that when explicitly queer bodies emerge onto public stages, audiences are made intimately aware of their own bodies’ identifications and desires. As the sheen of the New South Africa began to fade, these performances revealed the inadequacy and, indeed, the violence, of the Rainbow Nation as an aspirational metaphor. Simultaneously they created space for imagining new radical configurations of belonging.

Two decades after its conception, this humoristic cartoon series is still South Africa’s best reminder to laugh at itself as a society. Hilarious and iconic, the family of Madam, Eve, Thandi, and Mother Anderson are dysfunctional, chaotic, and an unfailingly satirical reflection of everyday life. Highlighting classic cartoons from the past 20 years, this annual collection is the ultimate collector's item.

Allusions to Shakespeare haunt our contemporary culture in a myriad of ways, whether through brief references or sustained intertextual engagements. Shakespeare’s plays and motifs have been appropriated in fragmentary forms onstage and onscreen since motion pictures were invented in 1893. This collection of essays extends beyond a US-UK axis to bring together an international group of scholars to explore Shakespearean appropriations in unexpected contexts in lesser-known films and television shows in India, Brazil, Russia, France, Australia, South Africa, East-Central Europe and Italy, with reference to some filmed stage works.

Contemporary Farce on the Global Stage provides audiences and practitioners a detailed survey of how the genre of farce has evolved in the 21st century. Often dismissed as frivolous, farce speaks a universal language, with the power to incisively interrogate our world through laughter. Unlike farces of the past, where a successful resolution was a given and we could laugh uproariously at adulterous behaviour, farce no longer guarantees an audience a happy ending where everything works out. Contemporary farce is no longer ‘diverting us’ with laughter. It is reflecting the fractured world around us. With a foreword by award-winning playwright Ken Ludwig, the book introduces readers to the Mechanics of Farce, and the ‘Four Ps,’ which are key elements for understanding, appreciating, and exploring the form. The Five Doors to Contemporary Farce identify five major categories into which farces fall. Behind each door are a wide selection of plays, modern and contemporary examples from all over the world, written by a diverse group of playwrights who traverse gender, race, ethnicity, and sexual orientation. Supplementing each section are comments, observations, and reflections from award-winning playwrights, directors, actors, designers, dramaturgs, and scholars. Designed specifically to give theatre-makers a rounded understanding that will underpin their own productions, this book will also be of use to theatre and performance studies students.
