The following topics are covered in detail: modal analysis, including experimental methods, to obtain the tool point frequency response function; descriptions of turning and milling, including force modeling, time domain simulation, stability lobe diagram algorithms, and surface location error calculation for milling; and receptance coupling methods for tool point frequency response prediction, including beam theory. Numerical examples are included, as well as the MATLAB code used to develop the figures.

“Machine Tool Vibrations and Cutting Dynamics” covers the fundamentals of cutting dynamics from the perspective of discontinuous systems theory. It shows the reader how to use coupling, interaction, and different cutting states to mitigate machining instability and enable better machine tool design. Among the topics discussed are; underlying dynamics of cutting and interruptions in cutting motions; the operation of the machine-tool systems over a broad range of operating conditions with minimal vibration and the need for high precision, high yield micro- and nano-machining.

Numerous models have been proposed for the study of the dynamic behaviour of cutting tools. An analysis of the main works published over the past 20 years reveal a lack of general methodology in the mathematical modelling of the dynamic cutting process (CP) and in the elastic structure (ES), as well as the absence of efficient and general methods for identifying the conditions under which the amplitudes of the vibration chatter between tool and workpiece can become problematic. This book provides a thorough review on the mathematical modelling and stability analysis of the dynamic machining system, presenting solutions for the practical problems that can be encountered. The practical points of the stability and instability of the DMS are discussed, together with various aspects of the modelling and identification of the CP and ES systems. The latest findings are examined in the context of a general study using matrix equations. Such a study on the matrix method is timely in view of the rapid spread in the use of mini and micro-computers.Based on the matrix equations of the CP and ES systems, the general equations of the DMS with time-invariant parameters are established, and various procedures for the actual stability analysis of this system are presented. Many examples are accompanied by illustrations which also provide adequate practical instructions for other problems in the stability analysis of the DMS. The last part of the book deals with the modelling and stability analysis of the DMS with time-varying parameters, random parameters and random input. The work is addressed primarily to those interested in the design and exploitation of machine tools in both industry and research. It will also be of interest to applied mathematicians, and can be used as a reference book for advanced courses in mechanical engineering.

Reliable scheduling in cutting conditions is very important in machining processes, and this requires thorough understanding of the physical behaviors of the machining process, which cannot be achieved without understanding the underlying mechanism of the processes. The book describes the mechanics and dynamics together with the clamping principles in milling processes, and can be used as a guideline for graduate students and research engineers who wish to be effective manufacture engineers and researchers. Many books have focused on common principles, which are suitable for general machining processes, e.g., milling, turning and drilling, etc. This book specifically aims at exploring the mechanics and dynamics of milling processes. Original theoretical derivations and new observations on static cutting force models, dynamic stability models and clamping principles associated with milling processes are classified and detailed. The book is indented as a text for graduate students and machining engineers who wish to intensively learn milling mechanism and machine tool vibration.

Presents new developments on machine tool vibration control based on discontinuous dynamical systems Machining instability is a topical area, and there are a wide range of publications that cover the topic. However, many of these previous studies have started by assuming that the behavior of the system can be linearised. Meanwhile, there are many recent advances in the fields of signal processing, nonlinear dynamics, and nonlinear control, all of which are relevant to the machining stability problem. This book establishes the fundamentals of cutting mechanics and machine tool dynamics in the simultaneous time-frequency domain. The new nonlinear control theory developed by the authors that facilitates simultaneous control of vibration amplitude in the time-domain and spectral response in the frequency-domain provides the foundation for the development of a controller architecture universally viable for the control of dynamic instability including bifurcation and chaos. Once parameters underlying the coupling, interaction, and evolution of different cutting states and between the tool and workpiece are established, they can then be incorporated into the architecture to create a control methodology that mitigate machining instability and enable robust, chatter-free machine tool design applicable in particular to high speed micro- and nano-machining. Presents new developments on machine tool vibration control based on discontinuous dynamical systems Provides a clear and concise approach to the understanding and control of machine tool and workpiece vibrations from an alternative view, contributing to an in-depth understanding of cutting dynamics and robust control of machining instability Equips the reader with the knowledge to understand the dynamics of cutting and operation of machine-tool systems in different conditions as well as the concept of cutting instability control Includes data examples in MATLAB coding
