Macht: elke organisatie heeft het en elke medewerker van die organisatie daarmee ook. Op de manier waarop overheden met hun macht omgaan, is ander recht van toepassing dan op private machtsuitoefening. Toch is er voor de klant vaak weinig verschil: hij is afhankelijk en heeft niet de mogelijkheid om eisen te stellen, laat staan af te zien van zorg, onderwijs of een huis. Daarom verdedigt Caroline Raat in dit boek de stelling dat de rechtsstaatgedachte – bij uitstek ontwikkeld om willekeurige overheidsmacht in te dammen – ook op private organisaties van toepassing zou moeten zijn. Door de verhuurmedewerkers van twee woningcorporaties uitgebreid over hun werk aan het woord te laten en vooral door hen praktijkverhalen te laten vertellen, wordt duidelijk dat deze stelling niet alleen een theoretisch gegeven is, maar dat deze nauw aansluit bij de alledaagse werkelijkheid. Verantwoordelijkheid en rechtvaardigheid, hulpvaardigheid en menselijkheid hebben ook daar een voedingsbodem. Om de idee van de rechtsstaat buiten de grenzen van de overheid te plaatsen, is het nodig om de rechtsstaat niet alleen als een juridisch, maar ook als een sociologisch en ethisch concept te beschouwen – als een norm voor alle situaties waar macht aan de orde is. Rechtsstatelijkheid als deugd voor organisaties is een antwoord op de vraag hoe willekeurige machtsuitoefening kan worden uitgebannen. Wat dit inhoudt, welke vormen van willekeur er bestaan en hoe deze kunnen worden tegengegaan, wordt in dit boek uitgelegd. Dit betekent geen kant-en-klaar handboek voor rechtsstatelijkheid. Het biedt wel een ander gezichtspunt op het ideaal van de rechtsstaat, op macht en recht. Het toont ook gedachterichtingen voor leiders en individuele medewerkers die streven naar een verantwoordelijke organisatie, ook als machtsbederf en willekeur de organisatie beheersen.

Binnen dat geloof worden behalve de Bijbelteksten van het Oude Testament ook die van het Nieuwe Testament als het Woord van God d.w.z. geïnspireerd door God beschouwd. Orthodoxe Christenen beschouwen Het Oude en Nieuwe Testament letterlijk als "Het Woord van God".

De Brief van Aristeas is een geschrift uit de tweede eeuw voor het begin van onze jaartelling. Het is geschreven in het Grieks door een Jood uit de Joodse gemeenschap in Alexandrië in Egypte. Anders dan de naam doet vermoeden, gaat het vermoedelijk niet om een echte brief, maar is de briefstijl louter een literaire vorm. De Brief van Aristeas is vooral bekend geworden vanwege de legende die het bevat over het ontstaan van de Septuagint. De Egyptische koning Ptolemaeus II Philadelphus zou een vertaling van de Tenach in zijn groeiende bibliotheek willen hebben. Daartoe liet hij zeventig (of tweeën-zeventig) Joodse geleerden vanuit Jeruzalem naar Alexandrië komen, alwaar hij hen in aparte ruimten opsloot op het eiland Pharos, voor de kust van Alexandrië.

While we acknowledge that all expressions of liberation theology are not identical, we must protest very strongly against the false divisions that some make: between black theology in South Africa and black theology in the United States, between black theology and African theology, and between black theology and Latin American liberation theology. But moving away from the illusioned universality of western theology to the contextuality of liberation theology is a risky business; one that cannot be done innocently. In the search for theological and human authenticity in its own situation, black theology does not stand alone. It is but one expression of this search going on within many different contexts. Until now, the Christian church had chosen to move through history with a bland kind of innocence, hiding the painful truths of oppression behind a facade of myths and real or imagined anxieties. This is no longer possible. The oppressed who believe in God, the Father of Jesus Christ, no longer want to believe in the myths created to subjugate them. It is no longer possible to innocently accept history "as it happens," silently hoping that God would take the responsibility for human failure. The theology of liberation spells out this realization. For the Christian church it constitutes, in no uncertain terms, farewell to innocence.
