A seductive vision of the future from the most promising firm in China led by Ma Yansong, an important voice in the new generation of architects. Conceived and designed by Ma Yansong, founder of MAD Architects, MAD Rhapsody documents the buildings of this avant-garde architecture firm and traces the development of their ideas through associated practice including art, research, and exhibition projects. With photographs, drawings, and models, the book highlights 23 projects from the past six years, both built and in process. Known for their “organic and dreamlike architecture” that creates a dialogue with nature, earth, and sky, MAD projects reach all over the globe. At age 46, Ma Yansong is one of China’s best-known architects. His curvilinear, free-form, and futuristic designs are often compared to those of his mentor, Zaha Hadid. Ma’s greatest inspiration is nature; his opera house in the northern Chinese city of Harbin resembles a snow-capped mountain, while his master plan for the city of Nanjing calls for sloping buildings covered with vertical louvers that resemble waterfalls. Other projects include the Ordos Museum in the wilderness of Inner Mongolia, the Absolute Towers in Canada, and the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angeles.

A cultural center for the future rises out of the landscape of northeastern China. Inspired by nature and imbued in local identity, culture and art, the Harbin Opera House is an outstanding example of architecture's ability to engage, transform, and delight. This gorgeous book takes readers through every step of the design and construction of the landmark building, which rises like a "snow dune" in a large wetland area. Philip Jodidio shows how architect Ma Yansong incorporated the city's surrounding wilderness and climate into a curvilinear design--a poetic mélange of edge and surface, softness and sharpness. Hundreds of photographs highlight how the enormous diversity of materials and construction--not only aluminum and concrete but also crystalline glass and Manchurian ash--brought together to create an invitation to linger, to appreciate the landscape, and to feel warmly enveloped. Philip Jodidio also looks at the effect this "cultural island" has had on the city--briefly a Soviet outpost, recently invigorated by investments in the arts. An exhilarating look at the making of a cultural landmark, this architectural exploration illustrates the impact of a single building on a community, and the role good design plays in creating a harmonious and spiritual connection between the built environment, humans, and nature.

'Shanshui City', the latest book from MAD Architects' founder and principal partner, Ma Yansong, Ma's poetic, yet precise language details the development and practice of design philosophy At the core of 'Shanshui City' is the idea that, "architects should delineate a new ideal for the city of the future, to gradually construct an urban environment that embodies both the convenience of the modern city and the ancient Eastern affinity for the natural world." 'Shanshui' is an idealised worldview developed by Chinese through extended contact with the natural world, a worldview that integrates the everyday life of humanity with the impulse to seek spiritual refuge in nature. This 'Shanshui City' is not simply an eco-city, or a garden-city, nor does it imply modelling the city's architecture on natural forms such as mountains. It represents humanity's affinity for the natural world, and our quest for inner fulfilment, as expressed in philosophies of the East. 103 illustrations

The firm of Denis Valode and Jean Pistre, which has been practicing for 25 years, entered upon a new phase of its career in 1992, when the architects — in cooperation with the landscape architect Kathryn Gustafson — received the Equerre d’argent prize of the journal Le Moniteur for the L’Oréal corporate headquarters outside Paris. Their predominantly large-scale projects are distinguished by their high degree of diversity. For some years, Valode & Pistre have not only been practicing in France, their native country, but also maintain offices in Germany, Italy, Great Britain, Russia, Mexico, China, and elsewhere. This book contains detailed presentations of 18 projects by Valode & Pistre, with documentation focusing on the specific working and design methods of the architects. Projects presented include the Renault Technocentre in Guyancourt, France; the Las Mercedes business park in Madrid, Spain; a group of office and hotel towers in Beijing, China; and the Hyatt Hotel in Ekaterinburg, Russia.

MAD has been commissioned by clients of all backgrounds, leading to an intriguing combination of diverse project designs. MAD's ongoing projects include two major cultural projects in Harbin: the China Wood Sculpture Museum and Harbin Culture Island, an opera house and cultural center that will retain the original wetlands as an urban park between the old and new city. The physical model is an important communication tool for architects. Although the proliferation of CAD programs has enabled the creation of increasingly complex computer models and virtual environments, there is also a growing need to address the three-dimensional qualities of architecture that may be lost when using such media. This book focuses on the inspiring possibilities for modelling the built environment with all the different media and techniques available. In describing the use of different models in different contexts, the book provides a practical guide to how and why models are used, and what they are used for. This second edition includes more detailed step-by-step exercises, expanded discussion of materials and techniques, updated coverage of digital techniques and new case studies.
