Every two years, on the occasion of the Made in L.A. biennial, the Hammer Museum presents the Mohn Award to an artist whose work in the exhibition is exceptional. The 2018 winner was Lauren Halsey for her piece The Crenshaw District Hieroglyph Project (Prototype Architecture), a large structure made of plywood and gypsum and covered in bas-relief carvings. These carvings-depicting graffiti, community members, and other elements significant to South Central Los Angeles where Halsey grew up-evoke the hieroglyphs found on Egyptian temples. This book also explores a range of Halsey's earlier work and includes original texts by poet and performer Douglas Kearney, curator Anne Ellegood, as well as an interview between the artist and curator Erin Christovale.

Encountering Palestine written by Mark Griffiths and has been published by U of Nebraska Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-12 with History categories.

Encountering Palestine: Un/making Spaces of Colonial Violence, edited by Mark Griffiths and Mikko Joronen, sits at the intersection of cultural and political geographies and offers innovative reflections on power, colonialism, and anti-colonialism in contemporary Palestine and Israel. Organized around the theme of encountering and focusing on the ways violence and struggle are un/made in the encounter between the colonizer and colonized, the essays focus on power relations as they manifest in cultural practices and everyday lives in anti/colonial Palestine. Covering numerous sites in Gaza, the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Israel, Encountering Palestine addresses a range of empirical topics—from marriage and queer aesthetics to policing, demolition, armament failure, and violence. The contributors utilize diverse theoretical frameworks, such as hyperreality, settler capitalism, intimate biopolitics, and politics of vulnerability, to help us better understand the cultural making and unmaking of colonial and anti-colonial space in Palestine. Encountering Palestine asks us to rethink how colonialism and power operate in Palestine, the ways Palestinians struggle, and the lifeways that constantly encounter, un/make, and counter the spaces of colonial violence.

The New Internationalists written by Sue Clayton and has been published by MIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-12-29 with History categories.

An account of the mobilization of thousands of volunteers who rescued, supported, and welcomed refugees during the recent European refugee crisis. In The New Internationalists, Sue Clayton tells the story of the largest civic mobilization since the Second World War, when volunteers--many young and untrained--took on unimaginable responsibilities and saved thousands of lives. During the European refugee crisis of 2015-2020, they witnessed first hand the catastrophic failure of established NGOs, and the indifference--and frequently, the open hostility--of the EU and national governments. Many faced state hostility themselves. Their accounts show how activist volunteers have shaped today's European humanitarian agenda, and provide a powerful critique of failures of current policy.
