Impetus for this landmark collection emerged from the extraordinary success of the Moms Gone Mad: Motherhood and Madness Oppression and Resistance International Conference in New York City, 2009. Cultural meanings extolled on motherhood are often overlooked and many women struggle and personalize issues to themselves and remain silent. This anthology synthesizes and roars out marginalized experiences of moms in a culture that relegates unconventional experiences to 'craziness' and her own 'madness'. From a feminist perspective, scholars in motherhood across disciplines and mothers steeped in the experience have come together to capture multifarious experiences of oppression to resistance in a groundbreaking anthology that embodies motherhood empowerment. This book enhances dialogue and revolutionizes our understanding of motherhood constructions and experiences by exploring the underbelly of mothering and subjugated experiences such as women's inhumanity to women and deconstructing notions of 'mommy' in literature/media that are oppressive. Critical examinations of the 'good mother', 'mother-shame', and 'mother-guilt', growing up a daughter of depression, body image and disordered eating in motherhood, postpartum depression are explored as well as experiences such as single motherhood, mothering a child with disability, and childlessness; and perceived anomalies such as losing a child to suicide and postpartum psychosis and more.

Originally called mad-doctoring, psychiatry began in the seventeenth century with the establishing of madhouses and the legal empowering of doctors to incarcerate persons denominated as insane. Until the end of the nineteenth century, every relationship between psychiatrist and patient was based on domination and coercion, as between master and slave. Psychiatry, its emblem the state mental hospital, was a part of the public sphere, the sphere of coercion. The advent of private psychotherapy, at the end of the nineteenth century, split psychiatry in two: some patients continued to be the involuntary inmates of state hospitals; others became the voluntary patients of privately practicing psychotherapists. Psychotherapy was officially defined as a type of medical treatment, but actually was a secular-medical version of the cure of souls. Relationships between therapist and patient, Thomas Szasz argues, was based on cooperation and contract, as is relationships between employer and employee, or, between clergyman and parishioner. Psychotherapy, its emblem the therapist's office, was a part of the private sphere, the contract.Through most of the twentieth century, psychiatry was a house divided-half-slave, and half-free. During the past few decades, psychiatry became united again: all relations between psychiatrists and patients, regardless of the nature of the interaction between them, are now based on actual or potential coercion. This situation is the result of two major ""reforms"" that deprive therapist and patient alike of the freedom to contract with one another: Therapists now have a double duty: they must protect all mental patients-involuntary and voluntary, hospitalized or outpatient, incompetent or competent-from themselves. They must also protect the public from all patients.Persons designated as mental patients may be exempted from responsibility for the deleterious consequences of their own behavior if it is attributed to mental illne

After winning a much-coveted scholarship at the age of eleven, Ciskas future promises to be as bright as the firework hurled over the fence into the backyard by neighbors eager to congratulate her and the family. However, like a shooting star, she very briefly lights up the world around her with her brilliance before disintegrating into oblivion. Indeed, her inability to adapt to absurd racial biases will plunge her loved ones into daily havoc and challenge her sanity. Consequently, Ciska repudiates a world that rejects her and seeks refuge among the insane in an attempt to preserve her sanity.

John Breeding's Necessity of Madness is a work of genius. He has a unique understanding of the damage that psychiatry causes society. Foucault would have been proud. Breeding's argument is so well researched, thought out and articulate that it would be difficult for anyone not to be convinced by him. Like any great work of literature what Breeding says is controversial. The publication of his book in Europe and particularly within the UK will inspire the mental health survivor movement to speak up and speak out. His brilliant philosophy gives more venom to the social model of madness and distress in the UK. As we struggle to develop our own philosophy Breeding's book can be used as a tool to give the social model the momentum it so desperately needs. Widespread circulation and consumption of this book within the UK survivor movement would make an underdeveloped philosophy developed. Breeding is so lucid and enlightening that he gives us all hope. There is no need for apathy anymore. It's payback time.

Thought-provoking and engaging, this edited volume invites readers to examine how anti-oppression practices can be fostered as a platform for transformation within social work education and organizational settings. Written by practitioners, educators, and students who have long engaged with anti-oppression and social justice frameworks, the chapters in this collection offer in-depth insights into how anti-oppression principles can enhance social work practice. Through supportive critiques and an exploration of the complexities of practice with and by marginalized populations, the authors seek to push the scope and boundaries of anti-oppression practice. They offer concrete examples on a diversity of issues, including developing Indigenous practice principles, addressing anti-Black sanism, challenging normative constructions of grief, supporting queer resistance, and advancing critical practices with children and youth. A well-timed contribution to the literature, this edited collection will be an indispensable resource for social work students, scholars, and practitioners.
