Siamo di fronte ad un libro quanto mai da sottoporre - del lettore, direttamente interessato alle vicende storiche di un passato che sembra lontano, ma che continua a vivere tutt'ora. Infatti con Benedetto Croce possiamo affermare che se vogliano capire il pre-sente occorre studiare il passato. Il vero punto di forza è senza dubbio la ricostruzione storica del periodo che risulta molto curata fin nei minimi dettagli: i personaggi, sono descritti in modo davvero preciso soprattutto quando l'Autore punta su momenti tragici come il ripudio di Ermengarda da parte di Carlo Magno.
