This book demonstrates that one is capable of achieving any goals, that one sets for him/herself. I hope it will be an inspiration to others, as they journey along the pathways of life. This book summarizes the achievements, the difficulties and sometimes struggles that were encountered along the way. It speaks of anxiety, fear, anticipation, but never apathy. There were times of restlessness, working and studying until the wee hours of the morning, just to meet the class assignments. Those were used as motivation to succeed. The vagaries of the weather in the UK and its unpredictability, played a part in my planning every move and decision. That too helped me to realize the nature of things and how essential it is to prepare, if possible, for the future. It is indeed a wonderful feeling, when one is able to look back over many years on a long journey and a productive life, and feel satisfied that something of note has been left behind. I trust this book will give food for thought and be of help to others

Golden Years of the National Symphony Orchestra: Stories and Photographs of Musicians and Maestros presents a rich and intimate perspective of the orchestra as it evolved in prominence and international expanse throughout the past nine decades. Through hundreds of stunning photographs captured by NSO violinist William Haroutounian, the tenure of seven NSO conductors, major guest artists, and NSO members are brought to life, giving a rare and exciting glimpse of musical life on stage, backstage, and on tour. Alongside these photographs are experiences from the members themselves, pieced together by Joanne Haroutounian. Humorous stories of mishaps during rehearsals and performances balance with some of the most historically significant moments in classical music history—from Mstislav Rostropovich’s return to Russia with the NSO and sheer excitement of the mobs to the sudden death of Gina Bachauer minutes before she was scheduled to perform in Athens. The book memorializes this rich and varied history and will enhance an appreciation for concert life.

An anthology of Horror Stories by various authors on the theme of Classical Music. ----- Editor's potentially biased appraisal: A basic reasonably priced paperback in the good-hearted tradition of the Small Press of yesteryear, with all its mixture of good and potential characterful 'idiosyncracies'. ----- "The 'Classical' in 'Classical Music' entails Romantic and all manner of other styles ancient and new: a Marriage of Heaven and Hell from Baroque to Broke. Indents and spacings-out with ligetis or ligottis and other knots of text that create new visions, new meanings: ugly or sublime, rarely neither, often both." a quotation from 'Thumper-Monster: The Phenomenology of Music' (2001) by Tokkmaster Clerke ----- "Classical music is the music that is sold from the Classical Music department of HMV in Oxford Street, London." a quotation from 'Simple Definitions' (1996) by Nial Hopper

A New York Times Editors' Choice The fascinating story of America’s national anthem and an examination of its powerful meaning today. Most Americans learn the tale in elementary school: During the War of 1812, Francis Scott Key witnessed the daylong bombardment of Baltimore’s Fort McHenry by British navy ships; seeing the Stars and Stripes still flying proudly at first light, he was inspired to pen his famous lyric. What Americans don’t know is the story of how this everyday “broadside ballad,” one of thousands of such topical songs that captured the events and emotions of early American life, rose to become the nation’s one and only anthem and today’s magnet for controversy. In O Say Can You Hear? Mark Clague brilliantly weaves together the stories of the song and the nation it represents. Examining the origins of both text and music, alternate lyrics and translations, and the song’s use in sports, at times of war, and for political protest, he argues that the anthem’s meaning reflects—and is reflected by—the nation’s quest to become a more perfect union. From victory song to hymn of sacrifice and vehicle for protest, the story of Key’s song is the story of America itself. Each chapter in the book explores a different facet of the anthem’s story. In one, we learn the real history behind the singing of the anthem at sporting events; in another, Clague explores Key’s complicated relationship with slavery and its repercussions today. An entire is chapter devoted to some of the most famous performances of the anthem, from Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock to Roseanne Barr at a baseball game to the iconic Whitney Houston version from the 1991 Super Bowl. At every turn, the book goes beyond the events to explore the song’s resonance and meaning. From its first lines Key’s lyric poses questions: “O say can you see?” “Does that banner yet wave?” Likewise, Clague’s O Say Can You Hear? raises important questions about the banner; what it meant in 1814, what it means to us today, and why it matters.

The upwardly mobile Landesburg family sells off their modest German dairy farm to seek financial success in early-twentieth century Berlin, where their son Sigmund eventually graduates from a prestigious medical school. Sigmund’s medical practice thrives and together with his wife Marissa, the great granddaughter of Otto von Bismarck, they rise to social prominence. As a dramatic symbol of his love, Sigmund gifts Marissa with a beautiful, uniquely crafted diamond and sapphire ring to be passed down through following generations. As she grows up, Sigmund and Marissa’s daughter, Anna, an intellectual prodigy, becomes fast friends with another gifted young woman, Marta, who is to become a world-renowned violin virtuoso. By the 1930s, the rise of Nazism has begun, and the Jewish Anna and gentile Marta find themselves and their families swept into the riptide of history. From Promise to Peril: A Family Saga is the first book in the trilogy Tracks of Our Tears, which traces the Landesburgs through overwhelming obstacles as they face escalating persecution and must struggle to protect their family from the tyranny and violence that begins to surround them. A gripping, meticulously researched melding of fiction and little-known historical facts, this amazing story offers a vivid perspective on the Nazi menace through the eyes of two brilliant young women who must seize their own power to survive.
