Mafia Code Analysis explores the unwritten rules that govern notorious criminal organizations, revealing how these codes shape behavior and maintain power within the Mafia's clandestine world. The book delves into the code of silence, Omertà , and examines Cosa Nostra's structure, illustrating how these elements ensure loyalty and control. Discover how Mafia codes, despite being unwritten, function as governance systems, adapting to persist against law enforcement. The book uses court transcripts and interviews to analyze Mafia codes across regions, from the Sicilian Cosa Nostra to the American Mafia. By combining criminology, sociology, and legal studies, the analysis provides a holistic understanding of organized crime. Learn how these codes impact law enforcement and broader society, influencing how organized crime is combatted. The book begins by exploring the origins of Mafia codes, then examines specific examples, and culminates in an analysis of challenges in combating organized crime. This approach helps readers understand the power dynamics within criminal organizations, emphasizing the importance of understanding these subcultural rules to develop effective counter-strategies.

The Sicilian Mafia is the most famous criminal organisation in the world. While its own code of honour, rustic chivalry and violence methods have been adopted by other illicit groups, very little is known about how the Mafia, Cosa Nostra, is actually organised and embedded in its territory. Who runs the day-to-day operations? What does it take for a Mafioso to raise the ranks and become a boss? How can the organisation protect itself and re-group after arrests? This book explores for the first time the structure of this criminal organisation through the lens of spatial and social network analysis and answers these questions. This is done by looking at the relationships of 176 members of the organisation that have been recently involved in building the Cupola, the highest ruling and judicial body in the organisation. Starting from the arrest warrant that uncovered this criminal restructuring, a method and several alternatives are offered, explained and commented on how to analyse and visualise criminal networks. The book confirms the assumption that the Sicilian Mafia is a criminal organisation that is deeply rooted in its territory. Mafiosi live, work and interact only in the remit of their own neighbourhood. Bosses are evasive, even to their own affiliates, and mid-level members are in charge of keeping the whole network operational. This book is particularly useful to students, researchers and law enforcement agencies that look at new ways to understand and disrupt the operations and structure of criminal organisations around the world.

Codes Of Corruption written by Karin Zotzmann and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-03-31 with Social Science categories.

Corruption is expanding internationally and so are strategic accusations of others being corrupt. It has become quite common for some politicians and their supporters to make false accusations of corruption against opponents in order to win power. A precise understanding of the phenomenon is therefore urgently needed for economic and political governance. The phenomenon has so far been investigated from the disciplines of sociology, criminology, politics, and economics, but rarely with a focus on the actual negotiation of corrupt deals. This is mainly because access to these illegal, often discursively mediated, practices is highly complicated. Empirical studies have therefore either focused quantitatively on the number of cases that came to light or on perceptions of and attitudes towards the phenomenon. Codes of Corruption attempts to fill this gap. It draws on a corpus of videos and audio recordings from Mexico secretly recorded by individuals who were present at the time and later uploaded to a public streaming platform. This corpus was analyzed through a variety of analytical tools to show the interactional and discursive work participants engage in to come to an agreement and, at the same time, the structural configurations that enabled, constrained, and motivated the participants. To capture these multidimensional causal configurations and avoid the pitfalls of reductionism, the theoretical and methodological framework adopted in this research is based on the philosophy of Critical Realism. Through this innovative approach, the book aims to contribute to debates and emerging research agendas in the study of corruption and thus to further the conceptualization of the phenomenon, its causes, and potential remedies. Its results will be of interest to researchers in the above-mentioned disciplines as well as to those working in Critical Discourse Analysis, Critical Realism, Interactional Sociolinguistics, and Pragmatics. Codes of Corruption will also be of interest to a wider audience of governmental and non-governmental institutions that engage in the design of anti-corruption strategies, training, and education.

Criminal Markets And Mafia Proceeds written by Ernesto Savona and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-03-22 with Social Science categories.

This book estimates the proceeds of crime and mafia revenues for different criminal markets such as sexual exploitation, drugs, illicit cigarettes, loan sharking, extortion racketeering, counterfeiting, illicit firearms, illegal gambling and illicit waste management. It is the first time that scholars have adopted detailed methodologies to ensure the highest reliability and validity of the estimation. Overall, estimated proceeds of crime amount to € 22.8 billion: 1.5% of the Italian GDP. Of this, up to € 10.7 billion (0.7 of the GDP) may be attributable to the Italian mafias. These figures are considerably lower than the ones most frequently circulated on the news, without any details about their methodology, which were defined by a UN study as "gross overestimates". Far from underestimating criminal revenues, the results of this study bring the issue of the proceeds of crime to an empirically-based debate, providing support for improved future estimates and more effective policies. The volume’s contributions were inspired by a project awarded by the Italian Ministry of Interior to Transcrime, which produced the first report on mafia investments (www.investimentioc.it). This book was originally published as a special issue of Global Crime.

This volume provides insights on how recruitment patterns develop for two related types of criminal networks: organized crime and terrorism. It specifically explores the social, situational, psychological, and economic drivers of recruitment. Although organized crime networks and terrorism networks can differ in underlying goals and motivations, this volume demonstrates common drivers in their recruitment, which will provide insights for crime prevention and intervention. The goal of the book is to explore the current knowledge about these common drivers, as well as highlight emerging research, to identify and prioritize a research agenda for scholars, as well as policymakers. The research presented in this work aims to fill existing gaps in the knowledge of recruitment to both organized crime and terrorism. For each area, it provides a systematic review of the existing research on social, psychological, and economic drivers of recruitment. It then presents findings from independent original research aimed to explore new ground not covered in these previous studies. The contributions to this volume were the result of a research project funded by a European Union Horizon 2020 grant, and present a diverse, international mix of expertise and cases. It will be of interest to researchers in criminology and criminal justice, as well as related fields such as sociology, psychology, and international relations. Chapter 13 of this book is available open access under a CC BY 4.0 license.

It is evident that published, serious, science-based work in Forensic Linguistics is predominantly written in English and focuses on casework from the English-speaking world. While the first aspect is understandable – given that English serves as an international lingua franca in scientific discourse –, the second aspect presents a significant limitation for the field. Should researchers assume that there is simply less crime in non-English-speaking areas of the world? A more pertinent question might be: What cultural, disciplinary, legal, or legal-cultural factors contribute to the lack of research in (and on) languages other than English? In addition to addressing the underrepresentation of Romance languages in scientific publications related to forensic work, the chapters in this handbook will also explore the reasons behind this unfortunate situation. Designed to engage readers, whether they are linguists, legal professionals, or simply interested individuals, and to spark interest in Romance Forensic Linguistics, this handbook follows three key objectives: First, we are committed to providing a comprehensive overview of the casework and research conducted in (and on) several Romance languages, including Peninsular Spanish, Catalan, Brazilian Portuguese, French, Canadian French, Italian, and Romanian. Second, the chapters in this volume seek to understand why Forensic Linguistics has thrived more in some Romance-speaking countries than in others. Finally, we aim to uncover the reasons for the slower development of Forensic Linguistics in regions where Romance languages are predominantly spoken.
