QUI EST SAINT CYPRIEN?Aucune figure du christianisme catholique n'est entourée de plus de mystère et de confusion que le plus obscur des saints, saint Cyprien. Bien qu'il fût l'un des saints les moins connus, Saint Cyprien fut considéré comme le patron officiel des païens, des magiciens et des nécromanciens pendant de nombreux siècles. Finalement, il a été retiré du calendrier officiel des fêtes catholiques. En dépit de cette rétrogradation apparente, Saint-Cyprien continue d'attirer de nombreux adeptes et de captiver l'esprit de ceux qui le voient comme un point de synthèse entre la religion de l'église et les arts interdits. Souvent confondu avec saint Cyprien de Carthage, Cyprien d'Antioche était un puissant sorcier païen vivant au coeur du monde hellénistique à la fin du IIIe siècle. Il était réputé pour ses prouesses dans la fabrication de potions et pour sa maîtrise des habitants des royaumes infernaux.L'histoire raconte qu'il a été embauché par un client pour gagner l'affection d'une jeune vierge chrétienne nommée Justina.Maintenant, certains disent qu'il a utilisé ses arts pour gagner Justina au nom d'un client, tandis que d'autres légendes affirment qu'il l'a fait pour son compte alors que son coeur convoitait la belle vierge. Dans les deux cas, il était conjuré ses démons et les envoyés après Justina. Quand les démons sont venus hurler avec des serres tendues, Justina les a réprimandés et bannis en signant simplement la croix. Stupéfié par la facilité avec laquelle ses pouvoirs étaient frustrés et touchés par la force de sa foi, le sorcier renonça à ses voies et devint un fervent chrétien, devenant finalement l'évêque d'Antioche où il devint célèbre pour ses dons d'esprit miraculeux.Pendant la persécution de l'empereur Dioclétien, Justina et l'évêque Cyprian ont été appréhendés et torturés dans un chaudron bouillant selon certains - et éventuellement décapités. En raison de leur foi inébranlable, de leur vie miraculeuse et de la condition du martyre, ils ont tous deux été élevés à la sainteté.En dépit des connotations religieuses évidentes de l'histoire et de la légende de saint Cyprien, il captivera ensuite l'esprit de nombreuses personnes, tandis que diverses légendes le concernant surgissent à travers l'Europe, puis dans le Nouveau Monde.La légende la plus en vue concernant saint Cyprien indiquait que bien que sa conversion fût authentique, il n'abandonna pas ses rituels de sorcellerie, et continua à pratiquer en tant que nécromancien de l'intérieur de l'église; en utilisant son métier au nom de son troupeau. Il est même réputé qu'en raison de sa connaissance intime des esprits, il est l'auteur de plusieurs prières d'exorcisme consignées dans le livre de prières du prêtre.Saint Cyprien reste, dans toutes les légendes, un lien unique entre les pratiques de l'Église et le pratiques de l'occulte. Plus important encore, Saint Cyprien démontre cet élément paradoxal du christianisme populaire qui englobe les arts magiques.
