Mainly dedicated to hieratic manuscripts from the Tebtunis temple library and contains contributions by Alexandra von Lieven, J F Quack, and Kim Ryholt. The Tebtunis temple library is the only ancient Egyptian temple library of which substantial remains are preserved, and the immense material -- estimated at several hundred manuscripts -- makes it by far the richest, single source of Egyptian literary texts. The present volume is introduced by a survey of the hieratic and hieroglyphic manuscripts from the temple library. The main genres are discussed and conclusions are drawn concerning the sort of compositions transmitted in hieratic as well as the cultural values which lie behind the choices. The survey is followed by full editions of a series of religious texts: an Osiris liturgy, the Ritual of Bringing Sokar out of the Shetit (previously known only from monumental hieroglyphic versions from temples and manuscripts for funerary use), the Votive Cubit (otherwise known essentially from fragments of the original stone cubits), the Nine-Headed Bes (a parallel to the famous illustrated Brooklyn papyrus but with a fuller description of how the practitioner should proceed), and the Ritual of Opening the Mouth (one version written for Sobek, lord of Tebtunis, the others for Sokar-Osiris). The volume further includes a slip of papyrus with four book-titles, a papyrus with a coloured drawing of an offering scene, and a decorated band for tying up a papyrus roll.

Les gestes, les attitudes, les regards, les postures sont autant de manières d'être propices à une lecture sociale et culturelle de l'Antiquité. Une approche pluridisciplinaire autorise une large ouverture chrono-culturelle, depuis les mondes archaïques jusqu'à la fin de l'empire romain, au travers des civilisations grecque, étrusque, italiote ou romaine. Les vases, reliefs, statues, mosaïques constituent un corpus considérable à partir duquel les contributions proposent, au-delà de la répétition formelle de modèles iconographiques et sans s'arrêter à de strictes typologies de gestes et de postures, une lecture historique du comportement et de l'apparence de personnages dans un contexte précis, funéraire, religieux, guerrier, mythologique... Le corps est observé, scruté, analysé par une multitude de signes. Les gestes, les attitudes ou les regards parce qu'ils sont uniques ou au contraire universels, deviennent des outils de lecture efficients et donnent au corps, comme objet historique, toute son importance. En effet, les images et les représentations du corps révèlent des relations, des oppositions et permet de lire des sentiments. Pour cela trois entrées ont été retenues. Dans un premier temps, l'analyse a porté sur les identités corporelles et les mises en scène du corps : des gestes des hommes aux gestes des dieux, des gestes de la filiation sur la céramique à la gestuelle funéraire ; de la désignation du citoyen grec à l'expression de l'identité sur les stèles du centre-Est des Gaules ; des déesses sur les mosaïques de Volubilis aux illustrations de Notor. Une deuxième approche thématique aborde les rencontres, faites d'échanges de regards et de manœuvres de séductions : la convivialité des banqueteurs, la musique d'Orphée charmant les animaux, l'expression de la passivité masculine dans l'art romain ; le regard immanent échangé entre Athéna et Héraclès, les danses des Ménades pour Dionysos, la séduction féminine par la magie amoureuse ou le parfum, odeur d'immortalité sont autant d'aspects abordés. Une dernière e partie retrace les tensions et les affrontements : la supplication de Dryas et Télèphe, la séparation douloureuse de Déméter et Korê, ou les représentation des valets de l'armée romaine mais aussi l'ensemble des contraintes faites aux corps ou que les corps exercent pour entrer en communication avec leur entourage : le corps-à-corps apollinien ; la gestuelle des sportifs, ou les manœuvres qui mènent les hommes à la bataille ou les animaux au sacrifice. Le présent ouvrage participe au renouveau de l'historiographie sur l'histoire du corps en abordant une période délaissée, méconnue ou ignorée sans laquelle pourtant aucune histoire du corps ne peut véritablement se comprendre et s'écrire.
