Magnetic crystals are ideal systems to study the universal properties of phase transitions, particularly systems with quenched randomness and frustration. Pure systems with different symmetries provide the foundation for studies in corresponding systems with quenched randomness. Because phenomena near phase transitions have universal properties, results from bulk magnetic crystals provide a basis for understanding phase transitions in films and nanoparticles, as well as many non-magnetic materials. This motivates the subject of this book, which discusses phase transitions studies in magnetic crystals from the perspective of an experimentalist who has done extensive work in the field. The advantage is that many experimental techniques are described in sufficient detail for a good understanding of the results and their comparison to theory.

In the quest for higher data density in information technology manipulation of magnetization by other means than magnetic fields has become an important challenge. This lead to a startling revival of the magnetoelectric effect, which characterizes induction of a polarization by a magnetic field or of a magnetization by an electric field. The magnetoelectric crosslink of material properties opens just those degrees of freedom which are needed for the mutual control of magnetic and electric states. The book gives a state-of-the-art review on magnetoelectrics research, classifies current research tendencies, and points out possible future trends. Novel compounds and growth techniques and new theoretical concepts for the understanding of magnetoelectric coupling phenomena are introduced. Highlights are the discovery of "gigantic" magnetoelectric effects which are strong enough to trigger electric or magnetic phase transitions; the concept of magnetochirality; and development "structural" magnetoelectric effects in artificial multiphase compounds. The book is addressed to condensed-matter physicists with a particular focus on experts in highly correlated systems.

Magnetic Resonance of Phase Transitions shows how the effects of phase transitions are manifested in the magnetic resonance data. The book discusses the basic concepts of structural phase and magnetic resonance; various types of magnetic resonances and their underlying principles; and the radiofrequency methods of nuclear magnetic resonance. The text also describes quadrupole methods; the microwave technique of electron spin resonance; and the Mössbauer effect. Phase transitions in various systems such as fluids, liquid crystals, and crystals, including paramagnets and ferroelectrics, are also considered. Physicists and scientists working in energetic materials laboratories will find the book invaluable.

The magnetocaloric effect describes the change in temperature of a magnetic material under adiabatic conditions through the application or removal of an external magnetic field. This effect is particularly pronounced at temperatures and fields corresponding to magnetic phase transitions, and it is a powerful and widely used tool for investigating t

Phase Transitions - 1973 is a collection of the proceedings of the Conference on Phase Transitions and Their Applications in Materials Science, held at Pennsylvania State University, Pennsylvania, on May 23-25, 1973. The papers explore some of the practical applications of solid-state phase transitions and consequent precursor property modifications in metals, ceramics, glasses, polymers, macromolecules, and biological systems. Comprised of 41 chapters, this book begins with an introduction to applications of phase transitions in materials science, followed by a syncretist classification of phase transitions. Subsequent chapters discuss phase transitions in materials such as liquid crystals, PLZT ceramics, disordered semiconductors, silver iodide single crystals, and aluminum alloys. The structural aspects of phase transitions are also considered, along with the statistical mechanics of glass transition; thermal expansion and phase transitions in silica; phase transformation of Fe-Mn alloys induced by shock loading; and order-disorder transitions in biopolymers. This monograph will be of interest to physicists and materials scientists.

The contents of this book stems from three different objectives. First, it is an introduction to the basic principles and techniques of Landau's theory, which is intended for teaching purposes. A second purpose of the book provides the practical methods for applying Landau's theory to complex systems. The last objective of the book is to incorporate the developments which have arisen in the last fifteen years from the extensive application of the theory to a variety of physical systems.
