The rheological properties of magnetorheological (MR) materials, such as their viscosity and dynamic modulus, can be tuned or controlled by changing the intensity of the magnetic field using appropriate control schemes. Thanks to their robustness, performance and smart properties, numerous studies have been undertaken on the development of new MR materials, and microscopic and macroscopic modelling approaches. Novel applications include engine mounts and clutch systems in the automotive industry, shock absorbing safety devices for cockpit seats in aerospace, and shock absorption from movement in semi-active human prosthetic legs.

Electrorheological (ER) fluids and magnetorheological (MR) suspensions show dramatic and reversible rheological changes when the electric or magnetic field is applied. Over the past several years, their performance and reliability have been significantly improved and their potential applications and acceptances have been widened. These fluids may make a tremendous impact on industry and technology. This volume contains a total of 107 papers which are most up to date and which give probably the best information on the state of the art of the ERF/MRS field. It covers the fields of material technology, mechanisms, bridging structure and properties on ER fluids, MR suspensions and ferrofluids, and the fields of their applications, i.e. damping devices, clutches, braking devices, actuators, optical devices, polishing devices and so on.

Smart polymers are polymers that respond to different stimuli or changes in the environment. Smart Polymers and their Applications reviews the types, synthesis, properties, and applications of smart polymers. Chapters in part one focus on types of polymers, including temperature-, pH-, photo-, and enzyme-responsive polymers. Shape memory polymers, smart polymer hydrogels, and self-healing polymer systems are also explored. Part two highlights applications of smart polymers, including smart instructive polymer substrates for tissue engineering; smart polymer nanocarriers for drug delivery; the use of smart polymers in medical devices for minimally invasive surgery, diagnosis, and other applications; and smart polymers for bioseparation and other biotechnology applications. Further chapters discuss the use of smart polymers for textile and packaging applications, and for optical data storage. Smart Polymers and their Applications is a technical resource for chemists, chemical engineers, mechanical engineers, and other professionals in the polymer industry; manufacturers in such sectors as medical, automotive, and aerospace engineering; and academic researchers in polymer science. - Reviews the different types of smart polymer, discussing their properties, structure, design, and characterization - Reviews applications of smart polymers in such areas as biomedical engineering, textiles, and food packaging

This book broadens the knowledge of tribology. This book is evolved out of current research trends on tribological performance of systems related to nano tribology, rheology, engines, polymer brushes, composite materials, erosive wear and lubrication. The book deals with enhancing the ideas on tribological properties, the different types of wear phenomenon and lubrication enhancement. Further, the tribological performance of systems, whether nano, micro or macro-scale, depends upon a large number of external parameters and important among them are temperature, contact pressure and relative speed. Thus, the book focus on the theoretical aspects to industrial applications of tribology.

The theme of the above conference was the SYNERGY generated by the interaction of the different disciplines relevant to ERF and MRS investigations. To stimulate this theme, all lecture sessions included a mixture of papers — one session contained applications, methodology, particle dynamics, structure characteristics and whatever is germane to the objective of furthering the standing of the subject. ‘Lead-in’ lectures were given by experts who had not recently been able to explain their work to colleagues in their own discipline. They were also charged with justifying the relevance of their area of work to the ESF/MRS field as a whole.
