Paul I. Wellman has penned a powerful novel about the long friendship and secret adventures of Andrew Jackson and Sam Houston—two titans of America’s most colorful era. This is a novel of “Old Hickory”, of his Indian-fighting days (when he met Houston), his battle that won New Orleans after the War of 1812 was over, the deal that did him out of the Presidency when John Quincy Adams won the election, his ultimate victory in 1834—of the man whom Sam Houston revered. It is also of Houston, who came to Washington as a Congressman, and found himself (as well as having a troublesome affair with the vain, selfish Peggy Eaton) defending Jackson, helping him fight his many battles, and finally going south to Texas, where he won freedom for and and became the guiding star of the wild, rising state.

Manifest Destiny And Mission In American History written by Frederick Merk and has been published by Harvard University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1995 with History categories.

Before this book first appeared in 1963, most historians wrote as if the continental expansion of the United States were inevitable. "What is most impressive," Henry Steele Commager and Richard Morris declared in 1956, "is the ease, the simplicity, and seeming inevitability of the whole process." The notion of inevitability, however, is perhaps only a secular variation on the theme of the expansionist editor John L. O'Sullivan, who in 1845 coined one of the most famous phrases in American history when he wrote of "our manifest destiny to overspread the continent allotted by Providence for the free development of our yearly multiplying millions." Frederick Merk rejected inevitability in favor of a more contingent interpretation of American expansionism in the 1840s. As his student Henry May later recalled, Merk "loved to get the facts straight." --From the Foreword by John Mack Faragher

Manifest Destiny the name given in the 1840s to a belief that the coast-to-coast expansion of the United States was both inevitable and justified, regardless of the means. Standing in the way were not only the native populations, but also the descendants of Spanish settlers who had lived in the Southwest for centuries. The racist belief that white men rightfully should expand their institutions into the area brought the United States into conflict with Mexico. War was declared in 1846, and by the time the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed in 1848, ending the war, the US had gained territory that contains all or part of the states of California, Arizona, Utah, Nevada, and New Mexico.? This book richly explores this fascinating part of history.

A Manifest Destiny written by Julia Magruder and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-08-01 with Fiction categories.

A Manifest Destiny tells the story of Bettina Mowbray, a sweet-natured and beautiful American girl who meets the heir of a British lord. He falls madly in love with her and they are engaged to be married. But his cousin, Lord Hurdly, is vehemently opposed to the union and Bettina's attempts to win him round are fruitless. Instead Bettina receives an offer and makes a decision that seems to doom her for a life of unhappiness and disappointment... This charming love story from 1900 may sound highly fanciful, but Julia Magruder's own cousin Helen had married a Baron to become Lady Abinger, so she had recent family experience on which to draw. This text of this elegant new hardcover from Benediction Classics has been carefully re-edited but includes the first edition's six black and white illustrations.

Elmer Bernstein S The Magnificent Seven written by Mariana Whitmer and has been published by Rowman & Littlefield this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-05-31 with Performing Arts categories.

Released in late 1960, The Magnificent Seven was a Western reimagining of the 1954 Japanese film Seven Samurai. Despite such stars as Steve McQueen, Yul Brynner, and Charles Bronson, the film was not terribly successful when it premiered. However, in the years since, the film has become recognized as a classic of the genre. And though the movie received only one Academy Award nomination, that honor was bestowed on Elmer Bernstein’s rousing score. Beyond the scope of the film, the score has permeated American culture: the music has been used in countless commercials and referenced on television shows like Cheers and The Simpsons. But what makes this score so memorable? In Elmer Bernstein’s The Magnificent Seven: A Film Score Guide, Mariana Whitmer examines the creation and development of one of the most iconic soundtracks in the history of cinema. Whitmer explores the significance of the familiar score through a variety of lenses, first delving into the background of Elmer Bernstein and his emergence as one of the key composers of the Silver Age of film music. The author then traces Bernstein’s early musical endeavors and considers why he was attracted to “Americana” music, which particularly influenced his scoring of The Magnificent Seven. The book also summarizes Bernstein’s early Western scores, noting that although they are clearly in the mainstream of the genre’s musical style, they are also enhanced by Bernstein’s own distinctive touches. Providing unique insights into the creation of this iconic score—which was deemed one of the ten greatest film scores of all time by the American Film Institute—this book explains what makes this music so enduring. Elmer Bernstein’s The Magnificent Seven: A Film Score Guide will be of interest to cinema and music scholars in general, as well as to fans of film music and the work of one of Hollywood’s finest composers.
