Milwaukee in Stone and Clay follows directly in the footsteps of Raymond Wiggers's previous award-winning book, Chicago in Stone and Clay. It offers a wide-ranging look at the fascinating geology found in the building materials of Milwaukee County's architectural landmarks. And it reveals the intriguing and often surprising links between science, art, and engineering. Laid out in two main sections, the book first introduces the reader to the fundamentals of Milwaukee's geology and its amazing prehuman history, then provides a site-by-site tour guide. Written in an engaging, informal style, this work presents the first in-depth exploration of the interplay among the region's most architecturally significant sites, the materials they're made of, and the sediments and bedrock they're anchored in. Raymond Wiggers crafted Milwaukee in Stone and Clay as an informative and exciting overview of this city. His two decades of experience leading architectural-geology tours have demonstrated the popularity of this approach and the subject matter.

Milwaukee's City Hall on East Wells and North Water streets is a landmark. Not only officially, but as part of Milwaukee's identity, from the city's flag to the Laverne and Shirley sit-com in the 1970s. The site for this familiar building was not easily chosen. The final location was not the first choice for most of Milwaukee's movers and shakers, and after it was finally settled upon, the difficulties only became bigger. Battles over designs and the bidding process became politically heated and personal in nature. Cost overruns in the construction, although common at the time, grew to gigantic proportions. The completed building was, however, structurally sound and pleasing to the eye. Still standing 115 years later, it is a monument to the Milwaukee government officials, architect and builder.

Milwaukee written by John Gurda and has been published by Wisconsin Historical Society this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-05-25 with History categories.

Paddle through the watery history of the Midwest’s Cream City. The success and survival of Milwaukee lies in the rivers that meander through its streets and the great lake at its shore. The area’s earliest inhabitants recognized the value of an abundant, clean water supply for food and transportation. Settlers, shipbuilders, and city leaders used the same waters to travel greater distances, power million-dollar industries, and even have a bit of fun. In Milwaukee: A City Built on Water, celebrated historian John Gurda expands on his popular Milwaukee Public Television documentary, relating the mucky history of the waters that gave Milwaukee life—and occasionally threatened the city through erosion, invasive species, and water-borne diseases. Telling tales of brewers, brickmakers, ecologists, and engineers, Gurda explores the city’s complicated connection with its most precious resource and greatest challenge. You’ll meet the generations of people, from a Potawatomi chief to fur traders and fishermen, who settled on the small spit of land known as Jones Island; learn how Milwaukee’s unique water composition creates its distinct cream-colored bricks; visit Wisconsin’s first waterparks; and see how city leaders transformed the Milwaukee River—once described as a “vast sewer” with an “odorous tide”—into today’s lively and lovely Riverwalk.

From City Hall to the Pabst Theater, reminders of the past are part of the fabric of Milwaukee. Yet many historic treasures have been lost to time. Blocks of homes and apartments replaced the Wonderland Amusement Park. A quiet bike path now stretches where some of fastest trains in the world previously thundered. Today's Estabrook Park was a vast mining operation, and Marquette University covers the old fairgrounds where Abraham Lincoln spoke. Author Carl Swanson recounts these stories and other tales of bygone days.
