Castelli e Ponti è tra i primi manuali tecnici della storia dell'editoria dedicato alle opere provvisionali. Quella che qui si presenta è la ristampa dell'edizione del 1824, allora distribuita in sole 250 copie. Rispetto alla prima edizione (1743) essa è arricchita da sette nuove tavole, raffiguranti i ponteggi ideati dai collaboratori di Nicola Zabaglia (1667-1750), e da una lunga e dettagliata nota biografica a firma di Filippo Renazzi (1745-1808) dal titolo Notizie storiche della vita e delle opere di maestro Niccola Zabaglia ingegnere della Reverenda Fabbrica di San Pietro. Il volume, pur mantenendo nell'impaginato il prestigio e l'autorevolezza del trattato di architettura, si rivela in realtà un autentico manuale tecnico, destinato alla trasmissione delle conoscenze operative necessarie alla costruzione di impalcature indispensabili alla manutenzione e al restauro della Basilica di San Pietro. Le invenzioni di Zabaglia costituiscono un caso anomalo e fortunatissimo della supremazia del saper fare sulla conoscenza teorica. Il libro si articola in tre sezioni. Nella prima sono illustrati strumenti, macchine e attrezzature da lavoro impiegati da muratori e falegnami nella comune pratica edilizia. La seconda sezione dispiega invece i ponteggi ideati da Zabaglia per interventi di manutenzione e restauro. La terza ed ultima sezione ripropone la corretta sequenza delle tavole illustranti il prodigioso trasporto dell'obelisco Vaticano, tratta dai compendi di Domenico e Carlo Fontana. Chiude il volume l'immagine del ponteggio costruito da Tommaso Albertini, al quale sono aggiunte altre sette tavole di grande formato raffiguranti le ingegnose invenzioni di altri artieri sanpietrini. Palaces of Reason traces the fascinating history of three royal residences built outside of Naples in the eighteenth century at Capodimonte, Portici, and Caserta. Commissioned by King Charles of Bourbon and Queen Maria Amalia of Saxony, who reigned over the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, these buildings were far more than residences for the monarchs. They were designed to help reshape the economic and cultural fortunes of the realm. The palaces at Capodimonte, Portici, and Caserta are among the most complex architectural commissions of the eighteenth century. Considering the architecture and decoration of these complexes within their political, cultural, and economic contexts, Robin L. Thomas argues that Enlightenment ideas spurred their construction and influenced their decoration. These modes of thinking saw the palaces as more than just centers of royal pleasure or muscular assertions of the crown’s power. Indeed, writers and royal ministers viewed them as active agents in improving the cultural, political, social, and economic health of the kingdom. By casting the palaces within this narrative, Thomas counters the assumption that they were imitations of Versailles and the swan songs of absolutism, while expanding our understanding of the eighteenth-century European palace more broadly. Original and convincing, Thomas’s book will be of interest to historians of art and architectural history and eighteenth-century studies.

Studiata ampiamente dal punto di vista storico-artistico, la Basilica di San Pietro non ha sino ad ora ricevuto sufficiente attenzione per quanto riguarda la complessa struttura amministrativa e organizzativa che, da cinque secoli, presiede alla sua costruzione, ricostruzione e manutenzione, la Fabbrica di San Pietro in Vaticano. Voluta da Papa Giulio II, la Fabbrica di San Pietro si presenta come un corpo estremamente articolato, di cui la ricerca condotta da Renata Sabene tenta per la prima volta un'esaustiva ricostruzione storica, basata su di un vastissimo apparato documentario pressoché inedito, nella sua duplice dimensione locale e di proiezione internazionale. Analizzate nel loro divenire nel corso dei secoli, le forme di gestione e organizzazione della Fabbrica disegnano gradualmente l'immagine di un organismo economico e amministrativo efficiente, capace di capitalizzare le conoscenze in campo edile presenti a Roma, di generarne di nuove cosí come di elaborare una politica del lavoro del tutto innovativa rispetto alle consuetudini del tempo. Vengono qui ricostruiti l'ambiente e le condizioni di vita dei lavoratori in forza alla Fabbrica, le consuetudini riguardo al loro arruolamento, le retribuzioni e la politica assistenziale, tutti elementi che mettono in luce una precoce modernità organizzativa della Fabbrica, frutto del connubio tra progettualità, attenta selezione delle competenze, pratica della solidarietà. La disamina delle modalità di raccolta dei finanziamenti necessari alla costruzione della Basilica pone poi in evidenza la proiezione internazionale degli interessi della Fabbrica, aprendo nuove prospettive di osservazione sulla questione della vendita delle indulgenze. In effetti, l'evoluzione delle esigenze economiche della Fabbrica si accompagnò non solo a quella degli organi direttivi, generando un'amministrazione tecnicamente capace di sostenere gli enormi oneri del cantiere basilicale, ma anche all'accorto utilizzo dei più efficaci strumenti finanziari in uso nell'età moderna. L'essenza della Fabbrica appare fondarsi, dunque, nella duttilità degli organi direttivi alle esigenze in fieri del cantiere, nella capacità di coniugare il cambiamento con il consolidamento, nell'attenta gestione delle finanze, in un percorso proiettato al raggiungimento dell'obiettivo indicato da Giulio II nel 1506: costruire e conservare la Basilica di San Pietro nel tempo.

The title of this issue of the Nexus Network Journal, "Architecture, Mathematics and Structure," is deliberately ambiguous. At first glance, it might seem to indicate the relationship between what buildings look like and how they stand up. This is indeed one aspect of what we are concerned with here. But on a deeper level, the fundamental concept of structure is what connects architecture to mathematics. Both architecture and mathematics are highly structured formal systems expressed through a symbolic language. For architecture, the generating structure might be geometrical, musical, modular, or fractal. Once we understand the nature of the structure underlying the design, we are able to "read" the meaning inherent in the architectural forms. The papers in this issue all explore themes of structure in different ways.
