Even the earliest weapon developers faced the need to understand how and why guns and ammunition work in order to improve their effectiveness. As weapons became more sophisticated, the field of ballistics naturally divided into three main areas of specialization: interior, exterior, and terminal ballistics. Providing unique coverage of all three ar

It S A Nonlinear World written by Richard H. Enns and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-10-15 with Mathematics categories.
Drawing examples from mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, engineering, economics, medicine, politics, and sports, this book illustrates how nonlinear dynamics plays a vital role in our world. Examples cover a wide range from the spread and possible control of communicable diseases, to the lack of predictability in long-range weather forecasting, to competition between political groups and nations. After an introductory chapter that explores what it means to be nonlinear, the book covers the mathematical concepts such as limit cycles, fractals, chaos, bifurcations, and solitons, that will be applied throughout the book. Numerous computer simulations and exercises allow students to explore topics in greater depth using the Maple computer algebra system. The mathematical level of the text assumes prior exposure to ordinary differential equations and familiarity with the wave and diffusion equations. No prior knowledge of Maple is assumed. The book may be used at the undergraduate or graduate level to prepare science and engineering students for problems in the "real world", or for self-study by practicing scientists and engineers.

The physics of vortices in classical fluids has been a highly important subject for many years, both in fundamental science and in engineering applications. About 50 years ago, vortices started to become prominent as quantum me chanical objects constructed from a macroscopic wavefunction. Here the key developments are associated with the names R. Feynman, L. Onsager, L. D. Landau, F. London, V.L. Ginzburg and A.A. Abrikosov. Recently, the physics of vortices has undergone a further important step of diversification, namely in unconventional superconductors and superfluids, which are characterized by an anisotropic and/or spatially complex order parameter. It is this latest evolutionary step of vortex physics that is addressed in this book. The indi vidual chapters are concerned with the microscopic structure and dynamics of vortices in diverse systems ranging from superfluids and superconductors to neutron stars. Each of the 20 chapters is written by one or more experts on the parti cular subject. Each chapter provides an introduction and overview, empha sizing theoretical as well as experimental work, and includes references to both recent and pioneering earlier developments. In this way non-expert rea ders will also benefit from these lecture notes. Hence, the book will be useful for all researchers and graduate students interested in the physics of vorti ces in unconventional superconductors and superfluids. It may also serve as supplementary material for a graduate course on low-temperature solid-state physics.

A “fascinating and irresistible” blend of science and sports that reveals what a baseball (or bat, or player) in motion does—and why (The New York Times Book Review). How fast can a batted ball go? What effect do stitch patterns have on wind resistance? How far does a curveball break? Who reaches first base faster after a bunt, a right- or left-handed batter? The answers are often surprising—and always illuminating. This newly revised third edition considers recent developments in the science of sport such as the neurophysiology of batting, bat vibration, and the character of the “sweet spot.” Faster pitchers, longer hitters, and enclosed stadiums also get a good, hard scientific look to determine their effects on the game. Filled with anecdotes about famous players and incidents, The Physics of Baseball provides fans with fascinating insights into America’s favorite pastime. “Delivers scads of interesting facts.” —The Wall Street Journal

Computational Modeling, by Jay Wang introduces computational modeling and visualization of physical systems that are commonly found in physics and related areas. The authors begin with a framework that integrates model building, algorithm development, and data visualization for problem solving via scientific computing. Through carefully selected problems, methods, and projects, the reader is guided to learning and discovery by actively doing rather than just knowing physics.

Applied Mathematics: Body&Soul is a mathematics education reform p- gram including a series of books, together with associated educational ma- rial and open source software freely available from the project web page at www.bodysoulmath.org. Body&Soul re?ects the revolutionary new possibilities of mathematical modeling opened by the modern computer in the form of Computational C- culus (CC), which is now changing the paradigm of mathematical modeling in science and technology with new methods, questions and answers, as a modern form of the classical calculus of Leibniz and Newton. The Body&Soul series of books presents CC in a synthesis of com- tational mathematics (Body) and analytical mathematics (Soul) including applications. Volumes 1-3 [36] give a modern version of calculus and linear algebra including computation starting at a basic undergraduate level, and subsequent volumes on a graduate level cover di?erent areas of applications with focus on computational methods: • Volume 4: Computational Turbulent Incompressible Flow. • Volume 5: Computational Thermodynamics. • Volume 6: Computational Dynamical Systems. The present book is Volume 4, with Volumes 5 and 6 to appear in 2007 and further volumes on solid mechanics and electro-magnetics being planned. A gentle introduction to the Body&Soul series is given in [63].

Quantum Magnetism written by Bernard Barbara and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-06-24 with Science categories.
This bookis based on some of the lectures duringthe Paci?c Institute of Theoretical Physics (PITP) summer school on “Quantum Magnetism”, held during June 2006 in Les Houches, in the French Alps. The school was funded jointly by NATO, the CNRS, and PITP, and entirely organized by PITP. Magnetism is a somewhat peculiar research ?eld. It clearly has a quant- mechanical basis – the microscopic exchange interactions arise entirely from the exclusion principle, in conjunction with repulsive interactions between electrons. And yet until recently the vast majority of magnetism researchersand users of m- netic phenomena around the world paid no attention to these quantum-mechanical roots. Thus, e.g., the huge ($400 billion per annum) industry which manufactures hard discs, and other components in the information technology sector, depends entirely on room-temperature properties of magnets – yet at the macroscopic or mesoscopic scales of interest to this industry, room-temperature magnets behave entirely classically.

The Static And Agnus Aerodynamic Characteristics Of The M823 Research Store Equipped With Fixed And Freely Spinning Stabilizers written by Frank J. Regan and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1972 with Magnus effect categories.
The report is the first in a two-part series of technical reports on the dynamics and aerodynamics of free-fall stores using freely spinning stabilizers. Presented are the results of recent wind-tunnel measurements of the normal force, pitching moment and Magnus force and moment on the M823 Research Store in transonic flow. Comparisons are made between configurations equipped with fixed and freely spinning stabilizers, with regard to sign and relative magnitude of the Magnus force and moment. A method is presented and applied whereby the Magnus force and moment are corrected for flow angularity.
