The Mahabharata Is The Primary Source Book Of Indian Military Thought And Tradition. It Is Truly An Index Of Civilisational Development And Constitutes The Indian Weltanschuung . Over Two Millenniums Ago It Outlined An Attrition Oriented Indian Paradigm Of War That Was Primarily Centred On A Pure Force On Force Regime. The Indian Armies Of That Period Had Evolved From The Two Basic Arms Of The Early Vedic Period To A Highly Sophisticated Four Arms Structure Comprising Chariots, Elephants, Cavalry And Infanty. The Mahabharta Mentions Vyuhas Or Battle Arrays And Battle Drills That Coordinated The Actions Of These Four Variable Speed Manoeuver Masses On The Battlefield. It all probably was a tale. However, serious research does identify some events, from about a thousand years before the Common Era, that qualify as the bases of the epic’s plot. Apparently, collective memory evolved significantly through the centuries before their stories, legends, and allegories took the forms that we know from the epic today. And yet, even if no set of historical events can be found to correspond with epic episodes, its many stories, legends, and allegories nevertheless conform to themes that were at one time authentic. In other words, whether or not epic episodes were historical, the ideas and concepts they represent were.It is with these ideas and concepts that Framing the Mahabharata weaves the pattern of South Asian society as it evolved through the cusp of the Bronze and Iron Ages, developing motifs we are familiar with today. Against this pattern, it reconstructs the military tactics, technology, and sociology that marked the interplay of nomadic and sedentary folks, most poignantly depicted in the career of war-chariots.

A work with broad implications for theories of comparative strategic behavior and civil-military relations, Societies and Military Power uses the long history of the armies of India as a basis for analyzing whether the character of a given society affects the amount of military power that can be generated by the armies that emerge from that society. By examining the changing relationship between ruling elites in the Indian subcontinent and their armed forces, the book shows that divisions within society are mirrored within the military, even within the contemporary professional military. Stephen Peter Rosen explores the proposition that cultural explanations don't sufficiently account for changes in military power, whereas social structure does. He suggests also that the dynamics of civil-military relations in a non-Western setting are not explicable without social-structural insight. He concludes that the comparative study of strategic behavior and military organization has lacked a sound foundation, which the social-structural explanation offered in this book begins to provide.
