पश्चिम बंगाल समेत पूरे भारतवर्ष में भूमिहीन किसानों के असंतोष और विद्रोह का इतिहास समकालीन घटना-मात्र नहीं है। आधुनिक इतिहास के हर पर्व में विद्रोह का प्रयास, उनके प्रति दूसरे वर्ग के शोषण के चरित्र को प्रकट करता है, जो अब तक प्रायः अपरिवर्तनीय बना हुआ है। दार्जिलिंग जिले के नक्सलबाड़ी, खड़ीबाड़ी और फाँसी से लगनेवाले अंचल के अधिकांश भाग के रहनेवाले आदिवासी भूमिहीन किसान हैं। उनमें मेदी, लेप्चा, भोटिया, संथाल, उराँव, राजबंसी और गोरखा संप्रदाय के लोग हैं। स्थानीय जमींदारों ने बहुत दिनों से चली आ रही ‘अधिया’ की व्यवस्था में उन पर अपना शोषण जारी रखा है। इस व्यवस्था के नियम के अनुसार ज़मींदार भूमिहीन किसानों को बीज के लिए धान, हल-बैल, खाना और मामूली पैसे देकर अपने खेत में काम पर लगाते और उपज का अधिकांश भाग ज़मींदार के घर जाता। ऐसे में वे लोग सामंती हिंसा के विरुद्ध हिंसा को चुन लें तो क्या आश्चर्य? अग्निगर्भ का संथाल किसान बसाई टुडू किसान-संघर्ष में मरता है। लाश जलने के बावजूद उसके फिर सक्रिय होने की खबर आती है। बसाई फिर मारा जाता है। वह अग्निबीज है और अग्निगर्भ है सामंती कृषि-व्यवस्था। महाश्वेता देवी मानती हैं कि इस धधकते वर्ग-संघर्ष को अनदेखा करने और इतिहास के इस संधिकाल में शोषितों का पक्ष न लेनेवाले लेखकों को इतिहास माफ नहीं करेगा। असंवेदनशील व्यवस्था के विरुद्ध शुद्ध, सूर्य-समान क्रोध ही उनकी प्रेरणा है। एक अत्यन्त प्रेरक कृति।

महाश्वेता देवी की रचनाओं की केन्द्रीय चेतना लोकधर्मी है । उनके लेखन का बुनियादी मन्तव्य दलितों की ज़िन्दगी को उभारकर सामने लाना है जो न केवल सामन्ती शोषण के शिकार हैं बल्कि जिन्हें तबाह करने में सरकारी नीतियों की भी बराबर की हिस्सेदारी है । यह बात साप़़ हो चुकी है कि आदिवासी जन–जीवन की त्रासदी के बीज विषैली राजनीति में हैं और राजनीति की चालाक साज़िशों ने संगठित वर्ग–संघर्ष को विभाजित जाति–संघर्ष में तब्दील कर दिया है । ज़मींदारों ने भूमिहीन आदिवासियों के बीच र्मों और जातियों के बँटवारे का सहारा लेकर उन्हें संगठित वर्ग की शक्ल में कभी नहीं आने दिया । महाश्वेताजी के कथानक इन बारीक षड्यंत्रों को बेनकाब करते हैं । सरकारी कामकाज के असली चेहरों और ज़मींदारों के साथ सरकारी नुमाइंदों के आर्थिक रिश्तों को देखने–समझने के लिए जिस दृष्टि की ज़रूरत है, महाश्वेताजी की रचनाएँ उस दृष्टि को पैदा करती हैं । इस पुस्तक के पृष्ठों पर तीन सशक्त उपन्यास छपे हैं । इन उपन्यासों का कथा–केन्द्र आदिवासी स्त्रियों की पीड़ित ज़िन्दगी है । तीन उपन्यासों की तीन प्रतिनिधि स्त्री पात्र हैं दौलति, बासमती और गोहुअन । समान आर्थिक स्थितियों के बावजूद तीनों की सोच में बुनियादी प़़र्क़़् है और यह प़़र्क़़् आदिवासी स्त्री के मनोविज्ञान और उसकी संघर्ष–क्षमता को विभिन्न रूपों में उद्घाटित करता है । स्त्री का क्रय–विक्रय, देह–व्यापार की कसैली विवशताएँ, ‘चुकी’ हुई वेश्याओं की तिरस्कृत वेदनाएँ और उनकी गुमनाम मौतय और इन सबके लिए ज़िम्मेवार सामन्ती व्यवस्था के दाँवपेंचµयह संक्षेप है ‘दौलति’ का । दूसरा तेज़–तर्रार उपन्यास है पलामौ । आदिवासियों के शोषण को एक नए कोण से समझने की कोशिश, और आदिवासियों के विकास के सम्बन्ध में सरकारी दावों के खोखलेपन का पर्दाप़़ाश करनेवाला यह उपन्यास आदिवासी–जीवन का प्रतिबिम्ब है । ‘गोहुअन’ की कथा आदिवासी स्त्री के एक भिन्न स्वरूप को सामने रखती है । एक विषैले सर्प ‘गोहुअन’ के प्रतीक के ज़रिए आदिवासी स्त्री का स्वाभिमानी तेवर इस उपन्यास में बहुत गम्भीरता से व्यक्त हुआ है ।
