Maine's Remarkable Women tells the stories of fifteen strong and determined women who broke through social, cultural, or political barriers. Through their passions for art, exploration, literature, politics, music, and nature, these women made contributions to society that still resonate today. Meet Marguerite "Tante Blanche" Thibodeau Cyr, "The Mother of Madawaska," whose bravery and kindness during one brutal winter saved her frontier settlement; botanist-artist Kate Furbish, who explored Maine's wilderness, collecting, classifying, and painting all of its flowering plants; and Florence Nicolar Shay, a Native-American basketmaker who demanded and succeeded in gaining rights for her tribe, the Penobscots. Each of these women demonstrated courage, compassion, and an independence of spirit that is as inspiring now as it was then. Read about their extraordinary lives in this collection of brief and absorbing biographies.

James Mitchell presents a series of biographical sketches and interviews of more than thirty Maine women who have all carved out meaningful careers for themselves. The women shared their stories and dreams with Mitchell to celebrate their and other women's accomplishments. Although their stories and fields of endeavor -- ranging from commercial fishing (Linda Greenlaw), to writing (Kate Barnes), to government service (Chellie Pingree) -- are different, the women all celebrate the remarkable resilience of the human spirit. What they have in common is intelligence, passion, enthusiasm, and a firm belief in their abilities. Black and white photographs accompany each profile.

Katongo Maine’s autobiography is the first book to be published in a new series of memoirs, entitled Remarkable Women of Zambia, that will show how women have made their mark in politics, civil society, education, business and NGOs. Women were always involved in Zambia’s Independence struggle and after it was achieved they queued alongside men to vote in the first elections. They have never given up their involvement in public life but, as elsewhere, it was men who slipped into most positions of real power and stayed there. For women throughout the world, the struggle to fulfil their potential continues and it is hoped that this series will not only claim a place for the remarkable women who figure in Zambia’s modern history but also act as an inspiration to younger women today. Katongo Maine’s story tells of a remarkable young girl from a poor family who defied her mother by refusing an arranged marriage, determined instead to become a nurse with a career and salary of her own.
