MAINE'S VISIBLE BLACK HISTORY, by H. H. Price and Gerald Talbot, explores how Black men and women have been integral parts of Maine culture and society since the beginning of the colonial era. Indeed, Mainers of African descent served in every American conflict from the King Philip's War to the present. However, the many contributions of blacks in shaping Maine and the nation have, for a number of reasons, gone largely unacknowledged. Maine's Visible Black History now uncovers and reveals a rich and long--neglected strata of state history and proves a very real connection to regional and national events.

Lives Of Consequence written by Patricia Q. Wall and has been published by Black Heritage Trail of New Hampshire and Portsmouth Historical Society this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017 with African Americans categories.

An essential chapter in the history of Massachusetts's Province of Maine has long been hidden in plain sight: the presence and role of numerous enslaved Blacks (i.e., Africans and people of mixed African, Native American, and white heritage) in its Parish of Kittery--an area that included what are now the towns of Eliot and Berwick. Bringing that missing story to light is the intent of this book. Local historian Patricia Wall has attempted here to push aside that barrier word 'slave' to try to see the men, women, and children to whom that inhuman label applied; to discover their personal circumstances and actions in order to reveal their impact on the early development of this region. In the course of several years of meticulous research into primary sources of all types--deeds, probate records, court files, church records, newspapers, manuscripts, and so on--Wall has skillfully uncovered the identify of more than 450 enslaved individuals who lived in the areas under investigation from the seventeenth century to 1820. In a series of contextual chapters, Wall discusses these people in a remarkable degree of detail and places them into the context of their life and times. Several appendices list both the enslaved persons and their owners and other detailed data.Lives of Consequence makes an important contribution to a more rounded understanding of life in the colonial and federal periods in early Maine. As such, it will be of interest to many academic historians and students, to professional and amateur genealogists, to museum curators, and to everyone concerned with recapturing this long overlooked aspect of the region¿s history. It is an important contribution to the growing literature that is "filling the gaps" in our previously often-biased interpretation of the New England past, and dovetails nicely with the mission of the Portsmouth Historical Society.

This two-volume encyclopedia presents a state-by-state history of African Americans in the 50 states and the District of Columbia. African American populations are established in every area of the United States, including Hawaii and Alaska (more than10 percent of the population of Fairbanks, Alaska, is African American). Black Americans have played an invaluable role in creating our great nation in myriad ways, including their physical contributions and labor during the slavery era; intellectually, spiritually, and politically; in service to our country in military duty; and in areas of popular culture such as music, art, sports, and entertainment. The chapters extend chronologically from the colonial period to the present. Each chapter presents a timeline of African American history in the state, a historical overview, notable African Americans and their pioneering accomplishments, and state-specific traditions or activities. This state-by-state treatment of information allows readers to take pride in what happened in their state and in the famous people who came from their state.

Race and racism have played a divisive and defining role throughout much of America's history. Slavery, Jim Crow laws, segregation, and Ku Klux Klan terrorism have inflicted deep psychic wounds, social disparities, and economic disadvantages that have diminished the promise of equal rights and opportunities for all. While much progress in race relations has been made in recent years-including the election of Barack Obama as President of the United State-it's clear that our journey to a post-racial era is far from complete. In virtually every measurable category, whether income levels, job opportunities, access to health care, life expectancy, high school diplomas, incarceration rates, do not fare well compared to their white counterparts. The dialogue entitled Race and Reconciliation in America was convened to provide a forum for a long overdue, open, honest, and constructive discussion among people of good will about the need for the American people to truly grasp the depth of past misdeeds, why the legacies of past oppression persist, and how we can achieve a more fair and just society embodied in the American Dream.

Reilly brings some of the most exciting and intriguing hidden Bangor tales to light--from a gas explosion that left a thirty-foot crater in the middle of downtown to the escape of a mayor's pet pig. Join Reilly as he reveals the hidden stories from Queen City history.

Providing chronologies of important events, historical narratives from the first settlement to the present, and biographies of major figures, this work offers readers an unseen look at the history of racism from the perspective of individual states. From the initial impact of European settlement on indigenous populations to the racial divides caused by immigration and police shootings in the 21st century, each American state has imposed some form of racial restriction on its residents. The United States proclaims a belief in freedom and justice for all, but members of various minority racial groups have often faced a different reality, as seen in such examples as the forcible dispossession of indigenous peoples during the Trail of Tears, Jim Crow laws' crushing discrimination of blacks, and the manifest unfairness of the Chinese Exclusion Act. Including the District of Columbia, the 51 entries in these two volumes cover the state-specific histories of all of the major minority and immigrant groups in the United States, including African Americans, Hispanics, Asian Americans, and Native Americans. Every state has had a unique experience in attempting to build a community comprising multiple racial groups, and the chronologies, narratives, and biographies that compose the entries in this collection explore the consequences of racism from states' perspectives, revealing distinct new insights into their respective racial histories.

Strangers And Neighbors written by Andrea M. Voyer and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-10-21 with Social Science categories.

In Strangers and Neighbors, Andrea M. Voyer shares five years of observations in the city of Lewiston. She shows how long-time city residents and immigrant newcomers worked to develop an understanding of the inclusive and caring community in which they could all take part. Yet the sense of community developed in Lewiston was built on the appreciation of diversity in the abstract rather than by fostering close and caring relationships across the boundaries of class, race, culture, and religion. Through her sensitive depictions of the experiences of Somalis, Lewiston city leadership, anti-racism activists, and even racists, Voyer reveals both the promise of and the obstacles to achieving community in the face of diversity.
