In any definition of terms, Dutch literature must be taken to mean all literature written in Dutch, thus excluding literature in Frisian, even though Friesland is part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, in the same way as literature in Welsh would be excluded from a history of English literature. Simi larly, literature in Afrikaans (South African Dutch) falls outside the scope of this book, as Afrikaans from the moment of its birth out of seventeenth-century Dutch grew up independently and must be regarded as a language in its own right. . Dutc:h literature, then, is the literature written in Dutch as spoken in the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the so-called Flemish part of the Kingdom of Belgium, that is the area north of the linguistic frontier which runs east-west through Belgium passing slightly south of Brussels. For the modern period this definition is clear anough, but for former times it needs some explanation. What do we mean, for example, when we use the term 'Dutch' for the medieval period? In the Middle Ages there was no standard Dutch language, and when the term 'Dutch' is used in a medieval context it is a kind of collective word indicating a number of different but closely related Frankish dialects. The most important of those were the dialects of the duchies of Limburg and Brabant, and of the counties of Flanders and Holland.

'Majoor Frans' is een eigentijdse roman van A.L.G. Bosboom-Tuissaint over een eigenzinnige en onafhankelijke vrouw, Majoor Frans. De roman belicht het tragische liefdesverleden van Majoor Frans die als jongen werd opgevoed en opnieuw haar positie moet zien te bepalen binnen de gendernormen van haar tijd. Het boek werd al snel een groot succes en is vaak herdrukt. Hoewel Bosboom-Touissaint altijd heeft ontkend dat het boek is geschreven om een rol te spelen in de vrouwenemancipatie wordt het desalniettemin vaak gewaardeerd als een oproep voor een betere positie van de vrouw. Anna Louisa Geertruida Bosboom-Toussaint (A.L.G. Bosboom-Toussaint, 1812-1886) was een Nederlandse schrijfster en kent een groot oevre bestaande uit voornamelijk historische romans en novellen. A.L.G. Bosboom-Toussaint begon ooit als vertaalster van Franse boeken maar toen haar schrijfstijl werd ontdekt en ze positief werd belicht door het tijdschrift De Gids, kreeg Toussaint al snel erkenning en schreef ze het ene werk na het andere. De introductie van realistische en complexe karakters in de Nederlandse romans is aan haar toe te schrijven. Ze wordt gerekend tot één van de bekendste Nederlandse auteurs van de 19e eeuw en haar bekendste romans 'Majoor Frans' uit 1874 en 'Het huis Lauernesse' uit 1840 worden nog steeds veel gelezen. Ze was bevriend met belangrijke schrijvers en critici van de 19e eeuw en trad regelmatig in openbaar debat met hen. Dit was toendertijd uitzonderlijk voor een vrouwelijke schrijfster.
