"Many inequality relations between real vector quantities can be succinctly expressed as 'weak (sub)majorization' relations. We explain these ideas and apply them in several areas: angles between subspaces, Ritz values, and graph Laplacian spectra, which we show are all surprisingly related."--Authors' abstract.

A Semimartingale Approach For Modeling Multiphase Flow In Heterogenous Porous Media written by David W. Dean and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005 with Fluids categories.
This paper is a follow-up to Dean and Russell's in which the formulation of a model of NAPL (Non-Aqueous Phase Liquid) flow in heterogeneous porous media is based on the traditional argument of developing a Fokker-Planck equation for a diffusion process and then modifying this equation to handle the behavior of the fluid particle at an interface between sands of different permeabilities. In this paper, an attempt is made to accomplish the same result starting with a theory of stochastic processes that allows jumps.--Authors' abstract.

A Stochastic Differential Equation Approach For Modeling Of Napl Flow In Heterogeneous Porous Media written by David W. Dean and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005 with Multiphase flow categories.
Presents a stochastic differential equation approach to multiphase flow, a typical example of which is flow in the unsaturated domain. Specifically, a two phase problem is studied which consists of a wetting phase and a nonwetting phase. The approach given results in a nonlinear stochastic differential equation describing the position of the non-wetting phase fluid particle.

"We propose adaptive selection of the coarse space of the BDDC and FETI-DP iterative substructuring methods by adding coarse degrees of freedom (dofs) on faces between substructures constructed using eigenvectors associated with the faces."--Authors' abstract.

"We report on an ongoing effort to build a Dynamic Data Driven Application System (DDDAS) for short-range forecast of weather and wildfire behavior from real-time weather data, images, and sensor streams. The system changes the forecast as new data is received. We encapsulate the model code and apply an ensemble Kalman filter in time-space with a highly parallel implementation. In this paper, we discuss how we will demonstrate that our system works using a DDDAS testbed approach and data collected from an earlier fire."--Authors' abstract.

Subspace Identification For Linear Systems written by Peter van Overschee and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Technology & Engineering categories.
Subspace Identification for Linear Systems focuses on the theory, implementation and applications of subspace identification algorithms for linear time-invariant finite- dimensional dynamical systems. These algorithms allow for a fast, straightforward and accurate determination of linear multivariable models from measured input-output data. The theory of subspace identification algorithms is presented in detail. Several chapters are devoted to deterministic, stochastic and combined deterministic-stochastic subspace identification algorithms. For each case, the geometric properties are stated in a main 'subspace' Theorem. Relations to existing algorithms and literature are explored, as are the interconnections between different subspace algorithms. The subspace identification theory is linked to the theory of frequency weighted model reduction, which leads to new interpretations and insights. The implementation of subspace identification algorithms is discussed in terms of the robust and computationally efficient RQ and singular value decompositions, which are well-established algorithms from numerical linear algebra. The algorithms are implemented in combination with a whole set of classical identification algorithms, processing and validation tools in Xmath's ISID, a commercially available graphical user interface toolbox. The basic subspace algorithms in the book are also implemented in a set of Matlab files accompanying the book. An application of ISID to an industrial glass tube manufacturing process is presented in detail, illustrating the power and user-friendliness of the subspace identification algorithms and of their implementation in ISID. The identified model allows for an optimal control of the process, leading to a significant enhancement of the production quality. The applicability of subspace identification algorithms in industry is further illustrated with theapplication of the Matlab files to ten practical problems. Since all necessary data and Matlab files are included, the reader can easily step through these applications, and thus get more insight in the algorithms. Subspace Identification for Linear Systems is an important reference for all researchers in system theory, control theory, signal processing, automization, mechatronics, chemical, electrical, mechanical and aeronautical engineering.

In the age of big data, being able to make sense of data is an important key to success. Interactive Visual Data Analysis advocates the synthesis of visualization, interaction, and automatic computation to facilitate insight generation and knowledge crystallization from large and complex data. The book provides a systematic and comprehensive overview of visual, interactive, and analytical methods. It introduces criteria for designing interactive visual data analysis solutions, discusses factors influencing the design, and examines the involved processes. The reader is made familiar with the basics of visual encoding and gets to know numerous visualization techniques for multivariate data, temporal data, geo-spatial data, and graph data. A dedicated chapter introduces general concepts for interacting with visualizations and illustrates how modern interaction technology can facilitate the visual data analysis in many ways. Addressing today's large and complex data, the book covers relevant automatic analytical computations to support the visual data analysis. The book also sheds light on advanced concepts for visualization in multi-display environments, user guidance during the data analysis, and progressive visual data analysis. The authors present a top-down perspective on interactive visual data analysis with a focus on concise and clean terminology. Many real-world examples and rich illustrations make the book accessible to a broad interdisciplinary audience from students, to experts in the field, to practitioners in data-intensive application domains.
