Perbincangan buku ini tertumpu kepada makhluk babi yang menimbulkan polemik dalam pelbagai isu sama ada makanan, kesihatan dan sebagainya. Babi merupakan organisma hidup yang disebut lima kali di dalam al-Quran, tujuh kali di dalam hadis, seterusnya dihukum haram dan najis oleh kebanyakan fuqaha. Terdapat dalam kalangan ulama mentafsirkan ayat berkaitan babi dengan mengaitkannya dengan kesihatan serta menghubungkan dengan elemen maqasid syarciyyah di samping menjelaskan babi mendatangkan kemudaratan melalui penyakit yang dibawanya. Di sebalik pengharaman babi, penyelidikan dalam buku ini turut merungkai kepelbagaian manfaat kesihatan khususnya melibatkan proses xenotransplantasi yang bertindak sebagai medium terapeutik pada masa kini. Beberapa model telah dibentuk dalam buku ini yang terdiri daripada Model a, b, c, d dan e bertujuan untuk mengkategorikan babi dalam model tertentu untuk memudahkan proses penyelesaian isu kesihatan yang mempunyai hubungan dengan Islam. Hasil penyelidikan mendapati bahawa, babi mempunyai sistem anatomi, fisiologi, metabolik seakan-akan manusia yang menjadikannya mudah diterima oleh badan manusia. Namun begitu, perlu diketahui bahawa babi juga merupakan binatang yang memudaratkan dari sudut penyakit. Penulisan ini menganalisis manfaat xenotransplantasi ke atas unsur babi terpilih yang berfungsi untuk dijadikan alternatif antaranya injap jantung, hati, buah pinggang, sel β islet, insulin dan sel neural babi. Penggunaan unsur-unsur tersebut tertakluk kepada konsep darurah yang turut melibatkan kaedah qiyas dan maslahah bagi menyelesaikan isu berkaitan dengan pertembungan antara manfaat dengan mudarat babi. Kajian ini juga mendapati bahawa, proses xenotransplantasi unsur babi turut memindahkan retrovirus berbahaya iaitu porcine endogenous retrovirus (PERV) ke dalam badan manusia yang berupaya melakukan integrasi bersama-sama genom sel dan tisu hidup manusia. Oleh sebab itu keharusan dan pengharaman penggunaan unsur babi bagi tujuan kesihatan perlu berasaskan konsep tacbudiyyah (perhambaan) dan bukannya atas konsep tacakuliyyah (rasional) semata-mata. Penggunaan babi menjadi isu kritikal apabila menyentuh soal kesihatan yang merupakan salah satu perkara penting bagi memelihara elemen maqasid syari’ah iaitu pemeliharaan kepada jiwa (Hifz al-Nafs).

As someone who was trained in the clinical sdentific tradition it took me several years to start to appreciate that food was more than a collection of nutrients, and that most people did not make their choices of what to eat on the biologically rational basis of nutritional composition. This realiza tion helped tobring me to an understanding of why people didn't always eat what (I believed) was good for them, and why the patients I had seen in hospital as often as not had failed to follow the dietary advice I had so confidently given. When I entered the field of health education I quickly discovered the farnaus World Health Organization definition of health as being a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease. Health was a triangle -and I had been guilty of virtu ally ignoring two sides of that triangle. As I became involved in practical nutrition education initiatives the deficiencies of an approach based on giving information about nutrition and physical health became more and more apparent. The children whom I saw in schools knew exactly what to say when asked to describe a nutritious diet: they could recite the food guide and list rich sources of vitamins and minerals; but none of this intellectual knowledge was reflected in their own actual eating habits.
