THE BOOK YOU WISH YOU'D READ BEFORE YOUR LAST PRESENTATION... There comes a point in your career where the presentations you're being asked to deliver are too important to just get through. Whether you're presenting to management, senior leadership, the board, your investors, your boss, the whole company - whoever it is, when stakes are high, you need to make it count. The problem is, you've got to where you are by walking the walk, not by talking it. And until you have learned to bring high-stakes presenting into your comfort zone you will miss out on the opportunity to influence and impress the people that matter. In Make It Count, Alex Merry will show you how to do exactly that. You'll learn how to communicate your message clearly and concisely, how to structure a presentation for impact, how to connect with your audience, and how to deliver presentations with confidence. Alex is a former COO turned public speaking coach who has spent the last 15 years refining the art of delivering highly effective business presentations. He learned how to present out of necessity, not out of love of the limelight. Now he works with fast-growing start-ups and corporate juggernauts to help their leaders deliver presentations worth listening to.

"Among the biggest challenges facing leaders of the newly established People's Republic of China (PRC) was how much they did not know. In 1949, at the end of a long sequence of wars, the government of one of the largest states in the world committed to fundamentally re-engineering its society and economy via socialist planning while having almost no hard, reliable statistical data about their own country. This book is a history of attempts made to resolve this "crisis in counting." Drawing on a wealth of official, institutional, and private sources culled from China, India, and the United States, the author explores the choices made and the effects they engendered through a series of vivid encounters with political leaders, professional statisticians, academics, ordinary statistical workers, and even literary figures. Early reliance on Soviet-inspired methods of enumeration became increasingly untenable in China by the middle of the 1950s. A series of unprecedented and unexpected exchanges with Indian statisticians followed, as the Chinese sought to learn about the then exciting new technology of random sampling. These developments were, in turn, overtaken by the tumult of the Great Leap Forward (1958-1961), when both probabilistic and exhaustive methods were rejected and statistics was refashioned into an essentially ethnographic enterprise. The author argues that this history, usually narrowly described as a universal, if European history, cannot be understood without acknowledging Soviet and Indian influences which not only revises existing models of Cold War science but also globalizes the wider developments in the history of statistics and data. For historians of China and social science, and political scientists, sociologists, and anthropologists studying modern China"--

I was born with a genetic disease called cystic fibrosis (CF). After the age ten, the disease started to take over my body. I was put in a wheelchair and on liquid oxygen. My lungs finally gave out. My family and I moved to the University of North Carolina so I could have a double-lung transplant. In August 1992 I got new lungs. I am not going to lie, there were many times when I thought I would die fighting for my last breath on a vent in a hospital. For years I put on a show for people. My smile would cover the physical pain my frail body was going through. I did not want pity, so I faked it. I feel that, since I have a shorter life span than most, I have to live every day like it is my last. I am not mad at CF because I believe God gave it to me to see what I would do with it. I just want to touch and inspire people so when I am gone, they will talk about me for a long time. I have done more at twenty-nine sick than most fifty-year-olds do healthy. —Coby James Gent (July 25, 1979–December 23, 2008)

Kat Caruso wishes her brain had a return policy, or at least a complaint hotline. The defective organ is constantly distracted, terrible at statistics, and absolutely flooded with inappropriate thoughts about her boyfriend's gorgeous best friend, Alec . . . who just so happens to be her brand-new math tutor. Who knew nerds could be so hot? Kat usually goes through tutors like she does boyfriends—both always seem to bail when they realize how hopeless she is. It's safer for her heart to keep everyone at arm's length. But Alec is always stepping just a little too close. Alec Stone should not be fantasizing about Kat. She's adorable, unbelievably witty, and completely off-limits. He'd never stab his best friend in the back . . . But when secrets are revealed, the lines of loyalty are blurred. To make it count, Alec must learn that messy human emotions can't be solved like a trigonometry function. And Kat has to trust that he may be the first guy to want her for who she is, and not in spite of it.
