A history submerged in the ever-shifting currents of the ocean emerges in this debut collection by Richard Georges. These poems craft narratives of long forgotten migrations, shipwrecks, and the personal with a vivid and sensual aesthetic that is located in the contested spaces between the sea and the shore. "The voice is placid, and leaves no print of self-conscious style and ego but rather the poems themselves, rolling softly up the beach and then sucking us into a greater history of the sea and our only and sometimes lonely selves-- our i-lands." --Vladimir Lucien "In these pages all roads lead to the sea. The poet never plots a route. Gods fall, forgotten paths return, poetry books break and glasses of water kill. Though the sea divides, it brings redemption. Georges shows all mankind to be one author. His beauteous poems rise like coral islands. Justice is done." --Andre Bagoo "Singing 'light into bleakness, ' in vivid poetic language that shakes us out of apathy, Georges' harsh and lyrical hymns portray the painful beauty of the Virgin Islands and Caribbean archipelago." --Loretta Collins Klobah

In all cultures and times, the poetic imagination has fed on the natural attributes of islands. An island is either a destination, or a home, or a place of exile and imprisonment, or simply a place to sojourn. It is an ideal vehicle for journeys treated as allegories, or for acts of finding that turn into acts of losing, or the reverse transformation. An island is not a continent; yet it can be an archipelago. An island is both a place in itself and a pretext for imaginings that need a local habitation and a name. It can give relief, and pleasure; or it can frustrate, isolate, and negate. Above all, it both invites and resists - or contains or constrains - the imagination. Poetry and Islands explores how islands become repositories of human longings and desires, a locus for some of our deepest fears and fantasies. It balances historical and geographical reference with a selective approach to poems and poets in English, and in translations into English. The study of particular poems in which islands figure in exemplary ways is balanced by a more detailed discussion of the poets who have played a major role in shaping human responses to islands on a global scale.

Making Peace With Spain written by Whitelaw Reid and has been published by University of Texas Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-09-10 with History categories.

Whitelaw Reid, according to H. Wayne Morgan, was a “leading newspaperman, more than an occasional diplomat, a power in his party’s politics, a supporter of some of the best in his era’s culture . . . Of all his legacy, perhaps the record he left of his part in the Peace of Paris is the most significant and most interesting. It not only reveals the workings of his mind and of the peace conference, but also suggests the complex currents that carried his country into the realities of world power in the twentieth century.” In editing Reid’s diary, Morgan used much material pertinent to the Paris Peace Conference of 1898, employed here for the first time. This material is a rich assortment of archival matter: the Reid Papers, the John Hay Papers, the John Bassett Moore Papers, and the McKinley Papers, in the Library of Congress; the Peace Commission records, in the National Archives; and unpublished materials in the Central Files of the Department of State. Whitelaw Reid, as a war correspondent during the Civil War, as clerk of the House Military Affairs Committee, and later as a successor to Horace Greeley on the Tribune, gained access to the leaders of his times and insight into their actions. In 1889 he was appointed U.S. Minister to France by Harrison, and in 1892 he had the dubious honor of being chosen as Harrison’s running mate on the losing presidential ticket. An influential friend and supporter of President McKinley and an occasional advisor to him, Reid was no stranger to politics and to international diplomacy when McKinley appointed him to the Peace Commission that wrote the treaty concluding the Spanish-American War. As a matter of fact, Reid’s opinion reflected the administration’s attitude of expansionism, the policy of Manifest Destiny—or “imperialism,” as it was later called. Reid’s diary records the details of the sessions of the Joint Peace Commission of Paris from September through a large part of December of 1898. His day-by-day entries reveal the complexity of issues to be considered, the tactics of both the Spanish and the American Commissions in attempting to gain advantage for their respective governments, the interplay of the personalities of the once-proud Spaniards and the brash Americans, the political objectives influencing the points of view of the various members, and the maneuverings that brought about the final resolution of debated issues.

All This is Love: A Collection of Virgin Islands Poetry, Art & Prose is a poignant reminder of the reservoir of artistic talent constantly percolating in the Virgin Islands. The contributors, each an accomplished artist in her or his own right, have brought a plethora of personal experiences and insight gleaned from individual journeys. Yet these stories, poetic entries, and artwork often recount, retell, and recapture the essence of Virgin Islands and West Indian narratives. Thematically and stylistically variant, the works by Elaine Warren Jacobs, Daisy Holder Lafond, Hilda Lewis Joyce, Jeanne O'Day and Tregenza A. Roach carve out their own paths; but in the process encourage the readers to re-imagine ourselves in relationship to our cultures, traditions, histories and each other. In point of fact, the construction of personal and national identities is not done for ideological exploitation, but rather emerges as the authors maneuver through a series of self-interrogation, reflection, and testimonies. At the center of this work is a clear allegiance and respect for the oral tradition, and an unabashed will to preserve and promote it. This is a timely collection with its rich cultural-traditional-personal tapestry that is fraught with introspection and interpretation of individual and collective realities contextualized in the vibrant West Indian landscape. But, fortunately for the reader, this is a work that blends a series of literary devices that make the negotiating of this text a welcome endeavor. All This is Love is aptly entitled, motivated as it were by a sincere love of the art of oral elaboration, of telling; guided by a passionate love of traditions, cultures, and histories and sealed and delivered by an even more abiding love for the Virgin Islands and humanity itself.
