The origins of early urban European centers have been the subject of continuous debate for a long time. Excerpt from Medieval Town Planning: A Lecture Delivered at the John Rylands Library on the 13th December, 1916 Some towns, including most of the great cities of history, grow; others on the other hand are made. And the process of town making is as legitimate as the process of constitution making. Prof. Pollard in a paradoxical moment has lately told us that constitutions that develop are better than constitutions that spring from the brain of the legislator.1 The answer is that it all depends on the constitutions. This is the case with towns as well as constitutions. Under certain conditions both alike must be made, or they do not come into existence at all. We have now got to one of those periods of history in which, as in the Macedonian age, the conscious creation of towns on a large scale was both a political and economic necessity. With the fever for founding towns that marked the twelfth and thirteenth centuries the golden age of mediaeval town planning set in. It is to this period that we have chie y to address ourselves. This volume of essays explores the interaction of Church and town in the medieval period in England. Two major themes structure the book. In the first part the authors explore the social and economic dimensions of the interaction; in the second part the emphasis moves to the spaces and built forms of towns and their church buildings. The primary emphasis of the essays is upon the urban activities of the medieval Church as a set of institutions: parish, diocese, monastery, cathedral. In these various institutional roles the Church did much to shape both the origin and the development of the medieval town. In exploring themes of topography, marketing and law the authors show that the relationship of Church and town could be both mutually beneficial and a source of conflict.
