Excerpt from Film Folk: "Close-Ups" Of the Men, Women, and Children Who Make the "Movies" As a detached, but interested, observer he watched the moving picture industry grow from its crude beginnings to the huge thing it has become, and during all those years he wondered why some one of the great army of publicity men employed by the various studios did not splash in and tell the truth about the film folk, finally concluding that it was either that their familiarity with the truth had bred contempt, or that the companies, for some strange reason, had employed only fiction writers. Excerpt from Movies for Tv For most stations in the situation assumed in the foregoing paragraph, live production using many actors in the cast may not be possible on any great scale owing to talent costs. Rehearsal time alone is Often a big factor in the total figure, and perhaps even $500 would be too high for a thirty-minute Show on a sustaining basis. The one-shot nature of television ensures that once the telecast is over the money is forever gone, and only a log entry exists to Show what was got for it. Kinescoping recording is out, unless there is a service available, and that is most unlikely in the size of town we are discussing. Also, the high cost of such equipment precludes the station's installing it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The World Film Encyclopedia: An Universal Screen Guide Much nonsense has been talked about films ever since films began, but even a casual glance through this book will show to the discerning reader that the whole world is very much alive to screen possibilities and that the makers of films have behind them a record of which they need not be ashamed. That there have been bad and indifferent films it would be foolish to deny - but there have been many good ones, or the industry would long ago have suffered an ill fate, a fate that it would have deserved, if the level of screen entertainment had been consistently low. As to the future, cinema-goers themselves have it in their power to see that the quality level is maintained and improved, though everything points to the fact that producers are fully aware of what is expected of them. It is my belief that there is no limit to what they may yet achieve by inspiration and faith in their craft, and in this reflection there is cause for satisfaction. NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK A modern classic of personal journalism, The Orchid Thief is Susan Orlean’s wickedly funny, elegant, and captivating tale of an amazing obsession. Determined to clone an endangered flower—the rare ghost orchid Polyrrhiza lindenii—a deeply eccentric and oddly attractive man named John Laroche leads Orlean on an unforgettable tour of America’s strange flower-selling subculture, through Florida’s swamps and beyond, along with the Seminoles who help him and the forces of justice who fight him. In the end, Orlean—and the reader—will have more respect for underdog determination and a powerful new definition of passion. In this new edition, coming fifteen years after its initial publication and twenty years after she first met the “orchid thief,” Orlean revisits this unforgettable world, and the route by which it was brought to the screen in the film Adaptation, in a new retrospective essay. Praise for The Orchid Thief “Stylishly written, whimsical yet sophisticated, quirkily detailed and full of empathy . . . The Orchid Thief shows [Orlean’s] gifts in full bloom.”—The New York Times Book Review “Fascinating . . . an engrossing journey [full] of theft, hatred, greed, jealousy, madness, and backstabbing.”—Los Angeles Times “Orlean’s snapshot-vivid, pitch-perfect prose . . . is fast becoming one of our national treasures.”—The Washington Post Book World “Orlean’s gifts [are] her ear for the self-skewing dialogue, her eye for the incongruous, convincing detail, and her Didion-like deftness in description.”—Boston Sunday Globe “A swashbuckling piece of reporting that celebrates some virtues that made America great.”—The Wall Street Journal

Film And Education written by Godfrey M. Elliott and has been published by Forgotten Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-06-29 with Education categories.

Excerpt from Film and Education: A Symposium on the Role of the Film in the Field of Education This book has but one major purpose - to present within the useful limits of one volume a comprehensive survey of the present and potential uses of the 16 mm educational motion picture in our modern society. It is a task which defies any single writer; the variety of film uses and the experience required to write about them are beyond the ability of one individual. For this reason, The Film and Education is the deliberate product of thirty-seven writers, each one discussing a phase of educational film use with which he is most thoroughly familiar. It should be emphasized at the beginning that the word "education" is used here in its broader sense - i.e., "the acquisition of knowledge or skill." It is a connotation of the word which encompasses both schooling and training, whether formal or informal, whether in school or out of school. It relates to that acquisition of knowledge and skill which occurs in school, factory, business, church, or in any one of a dozen or more aspects of everyday life. The term "educational film," therefore, as used in this book, refers to the motion picture in any and all of its uses where it intended to inform, orient, or motivate its audience to some useful end. In this sense, the educational film includes such categories as teaching film, business film, informational film, documentary film, religious film, training film, sales film, and many more. If this book seems to give an undue amount of space to uses of the film in the schoolroom, it is because film applications in that area are more particularized and the research and writing more definitive. Excerpt from The Best Moving Pictures of 1922-23: Also Who's Who in the Movies and the Yearbook of the American Screen This, so far as I know, is the initial attempt at a movie anthology, and in preparing it, I am confronted with the task of breaking ice that has never been broken before. It has been skated over, to be sure, and occasionally chipped, but this is the first serious crack in the surface. In addition to the many film classics, however, the author has included a number of equally entertaining films that deserve to be better known. Many of these movies are now available on DVD. Full credits and detailed reviews are provided for over a hundred of these classic films. Over two hundred more movies are represented by short reviews. Many of the reviews contain DVD details. Of course, not all classic movies have surfaced on DVD to date, but they are being issued at the rate of around forty a month! If you love classic movies, this book will provide an invaluable guide to some of the enjoyable films that are now available (and also, of course, some of the disappointing films that you might wisely avoid).
