This book presents the current state of the literature on the fields of homomorphic and searchable encryption, from both theoretical and practical points of view. Homomorphic and searchable encryption are still relatively novel and rapidly evolving areas and face practical constraints in the contexts of large-scale cloud computing and big data. Both encryption methods can be quantum-resistant if they use the right mathematical techniques. In fact, many fully homomorphic encryption schemes already use quantum-resistant techniques, such as lattices or characteristics of polynomials – which is what motivated the authors to present them in detail. On the one hand, the book highlights the characteristics of each type of encryption, including methods, security elements, security requirements, and the main types of attacks that can occur. On the other, it includes practical cases and addresses aspects like performance, limitations, etc. As cloud computing and big data already represent the future in terms of storing, managing, analyzing, and processing data, these processes need to be made as secure as possible, and homomorphic and searchable encryption hold huge potential to secure both the data involved and the processes through which it passes. This book is intended for graduates, professionals and researchers alike. Homomorphic and searchable encryption involve advanced mathematical techniques; accordingly, readers should have a basic background in number theory, abstract algebra, lattice theory, and polynomial algebra.

This book summarizes recent inventions, provides guidelines and recommendations, and demonstrates many practical applications of homomorphic encryption. This collection of papers represents the combined wisdom of the community of leading experts on Homomorphic Encryption. In the past 3 years, a global community consisting of researchers in academia, industry, and government, has been working closely to standardize homomorphic encryption. This is the first publication of whitepapers created by these experts that comprehensively describes the scientific inventions, presents a concrete security analysis, and broadly discusses applicable use scenarios and markets. This book also features a collection of privacy-preserving machine learning applications powered by homomorphic encryption designed by groups of top graduate students worldwide at the Private AI Bootcamp hosted by Microsoft Research. The volume aims to connect non-expert readers with this important new cryptographic technology in an accessible and actionable way. Readers who have heard good things about homomorphic encryption but are not familiar with the details will find this book full of inspiration. Readers who have preconceived biases based on out-of-date knowledge will see the recent progress made by industrial and academic pioneers on optimizing and standardizing this technology. A clear picture of how homomorphic encryption works, how to use it to solve real-world problems, and how to efficiently strengthen privacy protection, will naturally become clear.

""Crypto Anonymity"" explores the intensifying conflict between the desire for financial privacy through cryptocurrencies and the increasing regulatory pressures from governments worldwide. It examines how technologies like zero-knowledge proofs aim to provide anonymity and the potential implications of unchecked crypto usage, such as facilitating illicit activities. The book emphasizes the importance of understanding the technical mechanisms involved in privacy-focused cryptocurrencies to assess their effectiveness and vulnerabilities. The book progresses by first introducing fundamental concepts, then analyzing the regulatory landscape across different countries. It presents case studies of specific privacy coins, examines ethical considerations, and offers recommendations for policymakers, businesses, and individuals. It argues for a balanced regulatory framework that promotes innovation while preventing abuse; for example, stringent regulations could stifle innovation and drive illicit activities underground, making them harder to track. This book uniquely combines technical, legal, and ethical analyses, providing a holistic view of the crypto anonymity debate.

PREFACE In an era dominated by digital transformation, the power of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the vast growth of big data are reshaping industries, businesses, and daily life at an unprecedented scale. From predictive analytics and personalized experiences to autonomous vehicles and healthcare advancements, AI technologies are driving innovation and progress across all sectors. However, with this progress comes significant responsibility. As AI systems become more integrated into the fabric of our digital ecosystem, safeguarding the privacy and security of data has become a paramount concern. In this context, the convergence of AI and data privacy is no longer a theoretical challenge—it is a pressing reality that organizations must address in order to protect both individuals and businesses from emerging risks and vulnerabilities. Securing the Future: AI and the New Age of Data Privacy delves into the complexities of AI’s role in the evolving landscape of data protection and privacy. As AI systems become more powerful, their capacity to process vast amounts of personal and sensitive data grows exponentially. This has raised important ethical and legal questions surrounding the collection, use, and storage of data, as well as the transparency and accountability of AI-driven decisions. With incidents of data breaches, surveillance, and misuse of personal information increasingly in the news, it is clear that traditional data privacy frameworks are no longer sufficient to address the challenges posed by AI technologies. This book seeks to explore the intersection of AI and data privacy from multiple perspectives, offering an in-depth analysis of the technological, legal, and ethical considerations at play. It examines the privacy risks inherent in AI systems, such as algorithmic biases, unauthorized data access, and the potential for mass surveillance. Furthermore, it outlines the evolving regulatory landscape, examining how governments and regulators around the world are addressing the complexities of data protection in the age of AI, including the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), and other emerging frameworks. One of the central themes of this book is the balance between innovation and privacy. While AI technologies can unlock enormous benefits for businesses and consumers alike, they must be deployed responsibly to avoid infringing on individuals’ rights and freedoms. This balance is crucial as organizations seek to leverage AI for growth and efficiency while safeguarding the privacy and security of the data that fuels these technologies. By exploring privacy-enhancing technologies (PETs), secure AI design, and data governance frameworks, this book offers practical strategies for building AI systems that are both innovative and privacy-conscious. Another key focus of this book is the future of data privacy in AI. As AI continues to evolve, so too must our approaches to data protection. From decentralized data storage and differential privacy to explainable AI (XAI) and AI ethics, this book provides insight into how emerging technologies and approaches can help address privacy concerns while maintaining the efficacy and intelligence of AI systems. The future of AI and data privacy lies in the ability to integrate privacy by design into the core of AI development processes, ensuring that data protection is not an afterthought but a foundational element of innovation. As we move further into the digital age, securing personal and sensitive data is not just a legal requirement—it is a moral imperative. Securing the Future: AI and the New Age of Data Privacy aims to provide readers with a comprehensive understanding of the complex relationship between AI and data privacy, offering practical guidance, thought leadership, and a roadmap for navigating the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. Whether you are a technologist, data privacy professional, or business leader, this book will serve as an invaluable resource for understanding how AI is transforming data privacy and how we can collectively secure a future where innovation and privacy can coexist harmoniously. In the pages that follow, we embark on a journey to secure the future by not only embracing the transformative power of AI but also ensuring that data privacy remains central to its development and deployment.
