Consumers spend approximately $93 billion on denim products every year. This consumption comes at a great cost, with thousands of litres of fresh water, hazardous chemicals and energy contributing to just one pair of jeans, leaving the environment and the industry vulnerable to pollution and climate change. Using facts, figures, case studies and anecdotes, this book investigates why the industry has been so slow to adopt green technologies and offers practical solutions to designers and fashion executives who want to switch to cleaner manufacturing, including those working in the ‘fast fashion’ sector. It also offers advice to the eco-conscious consumer who wants to purchase denim more sustainably. Considering the full lifecycle of a pair of jeans from the cotton crop to disposal, it presents examples of how to go green at different stages. This book will be of great interest to fashion students and researchers, as well as designers, fashion executives, policy-makers and anyone who comes into contact with the world of denim.

Object Lessons is a series of short, beautifully designed books about the hidden lives of ordinary things. Few clothing items are as ubiquitous or casual as blue jeans. Yet, their simplicity is deceptive. Blue jeans are nothing if not an exercise in opposites. Americans have accepted jeans as a symbol of their culture, but today jeans are a global consumer product category. Levi Strauss made blue jeans in the 1870s to withstand the hard work of mining, but denim has since become the epitome of leisure. In the 1950s, celebrities like Marlon Brando transformed the utilitarian clothing of industrial labor into a glamorous statement of youthful rebellion, and now, you can find jeans on chic fashion runways. For some, indigo blue might be the color of freedom, but for workers who have produced the dye, it has often been a color of oppression and tyranny. Blue Jeans considers the versatility of this iconic garment and investigates what makes denim a universal signifier, ready to fit any context, meaning, and body. Object Lessons is published in partnership with an essay series in The Atlantic.

The Art Of City Making written by Charles Landry and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-05-16 with Architecture categories.

City-making is an art, not a formula. The skills required to re-enchant the city are far wider than the conventional ones like architecture, engineering and land-use planning. There is no simplistic, ten-point plan, but strong principles can help send good city-making on its way. The vision for 21st century cities must be to be the most imaginative cities for the world rather than in the world. This one change of word - from 'in' to 'for' - gives city-making an ethical foundation and value base. It helps cities become places of solidarity where the relations between the individual, the group, outsiders to the city and the planet are in better alignment. Following the widespread success of The Creative City, this new book, aided by international case studies, explains how to reassess urban potential so that cities can strengthen their identity and adapt to the changing global terms of trade and mass migration. It explores the deeper fault-lines, paradoxes and strategic dilemmas that make creating the 'good city' so difficult.

The ever-growing demand of jeans has led to the transformation of the manufacturing process into an assembly line, where workers are devoted to one task in order to maximize productivity. However, the sewing skills of the seamstress are still crucial to the quality of the cutting or sewing. This episode of the series how jeans were made is the second. I will be discussing the construction of jeans, including how they are sewn, which techniques are used and which machines. This step is often overlooked and undervalued in the making of jeans. The beginning point is design. It's the place to go back to make sure you are still on the right path. It is important to take into account all aspects of making jeans. The construction is an important aspect of the design. This is how the jeans will be cut and sewn. Let's first look at what components are needed to make jeans. You will need approximately 1.6 meters of fabric to make wide-loom denim. If you use selvedge to make fly and waistband selvedge, the fabric length for selvedge jeans is 2.5m. You will also require several hundred meters in different thicknesses and colors depending on your design. For most modern designs, six rivets are required. Ten if your jeans have hidden rivets. Eleven if you have one at the fly. At least one button is required, plus four to five buttons if the button fly has been added; if not, a zipper is needed. Liner material for the front pockets, this is the complete list. Let's now look at the cutting and sewing steps that will make it into a pair.
