Despite notable explorations of past dynamics, much of the archaeological literature on mobility remains dominated by accounts of earlier prehistoric gatherer-hunters, or the long-distance exchange of materials. Refinements of scientific dating techniques, isotope, trace element and aDNA analyses, in conjunction with phenomenological investigation, computer-aided landscape modeling and GIS-style approaches to large data sets, allow us to follow the movement of people, animals and objects in the past with greater precision and conviction. One route into exploring mobility in the past may be through exploring the movements and biographies of artifacts. Challenges lie not only in tracing the origins and final destinations of objects but in the less tangible ‘in between’ journeys and the hands they passed through. Biographical approaches to artifacts include the recognition that culture contact and hybridity affect material culture in meaningful ways. Furthermore, discrete and bounded ‘sites’ still dominate archaeological inquiry, leaving the spaces and connectivities between features and settlements unmapped. These are linked to an under-explored middle-spectrum of mobility, a range nestled between everyday movements and one-off ambitious voyages. We wish to explore how these travels involved entangled meshworks of people, animals, objects, knowledge sets and identities. By crossing and re-crossing cultural, contextual and tenurial boundaries, such journeys could create diasporic and novel communities, ideas and materialities.

Ritual Journeys with Great British Goddesses answers the question, who is the great British goddess? It provides thirteen rituals for development and growth, one for each of the thirteen different great British goddesses who were worshipped by our British ancestors. The goddesses are described in both historical and mythological terms, with rituals, meditations, and poems to help readers form a relationship with the goddess. The rituals are linked to the modern months of the year and the Celtic fire festivals, solstices, and equinoxes. The rituals can be followed word for word or used as the starting point for personal creative rituals. Suggestions for creating unique rituals and how to do so with focus and in a safe environment are given. Enjoy a year of discovery with the great British goddess and explore the Celtic heritage of the British Isles. Susie Fox writes poetry, songs, and music in the British folk tradition; teaches music, Reiki, and Seichem; and is involved in two local pagan groups. She follows a Celtic-British path of paganism, focusing on healing.

Timely re-issue of the groundbreaking manifesto for feminist architecture Making Space is a pioneering work first published in 1984 which challenges us to look at how the built environment impacts on women’s lives. It exposes the sexist assumptions on gender and sexuality that have a fundamental impact on the way buildings are designed and our cities are planned. Written collaboratively by the feminist collective Matrix, tthe book provide a full blown critique of the patriarchal built environment both in the home and in public space, and outline alternative forms of practice that are still relevant today. Making Space remains a path breaking book pointing to possibilities of a feminist future. Some authors worked for the London-based Matrix Feminist Architect’s collective, an architectural practice set up in 1980 seeking to establish a feminist approach to design. They worked on design projects—such as community, children and women’s centres. Others were engaged in building work, teaching and research. The new edition comes with a new introduction examining the context, process and legacy of Making Space written by leading feminists in architecture.

*Shortlisted for the BBC Radio 4 Thinking Allowed Award for Ethnography 2015* This book follows the global trail of one of the world's most unremarkable and ubiquitous objects - flip-flops. Through this unique lens, Caroline Knowles takes a ground level view of the lives and places of globalisation's back roads, providing new insights that challenge contemporary accounts of globalisation. Rather than orderly product chains, the book shows that globalisation along the flip-flop trail is a tangle of unstable, shifting, ad hoc and contingent connections. This book displays both the instabilities of the 'chains' and the complexities, personal topographies and skills with which people navigate these global uncertainties. Flip-Flop provides new ways of thinking about globalisation from the vantage point of the shifting landscape crossed by a seemingly ordinary and everyday commodity.

"The Buddha never compelled anybody to have blind faith in Him. He just exhorted us to depend on our own wisdom. It is not because we are born as humans that we become wise or foolish. It is because we can bring our defilements under control that we become wise, and it is because we can’t bring our defilements under control that we become foolish. We all have both good and bad qualities. Snakes, chickens, and pigs are not created for you to eat. It is in such existences that you yourself have been born before. We can’t harm anybody without harming ourselves. We can’t disturb others without disturbing ourselves. Patience means accepting. Very beautiful! Accepting both the desirable and the undesirable is the perfection of patience. You make friends with the defilements all the time, but the defilements never treat you as a friend in return. They treat you as an enemy. The Buddha never says, 'Come and believe'. He says, ‘Come and see; the wise can know, the wise can see’. ‘One who sees the Dhamma, sees me. One who sees me, sees the Dhamma’." [From a book published by Pa-Auk Meditation Centre, a Centre of Theravāda Buddhist Tradition]

The Philosopher S Address written by Jeff Mason and has been published by Lexington Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999-01-01 with Philosophy categories.

Jeffrey A. Mason has written an informative, accessible guide to today's most popular form of philosophical writing, the journal-length essay. The Philosopher's Address does what no other book on the market has attempted: it takes the reader behind the scenes of the writing process to expose the rhetorical underpinnings of philosophical texts. Mason argues that readers need to understand why philosophical writing is constructed as it is, and to be aware of the rhetorical devices by which authors seek to persuade them if they are to engage fully with these texts. This book is intended for a broad audience of specialists and students alike. Professional scholars will appreciate Mason's astute discussion of current trends within analytic philosophy, while students will benefit greatly from his comprehensive understanding of the social context in which philosophical discourse is produced, its various and competing schools of thought, and the theoretical concepts that inform them.

The appeal of sacred sites remains undiminished at the start of the twenty-first century, as unprecedented numbers of visitors travel to Lourdes, Rome, Jerusalem, Santiago de Compostela, and even Star Trek conventions. Ethnographic analysis of the conflicts over resources and meanings associated with such sites, as well as the sense of community they inspire, provides compelling evidence re-emphasizing the links between pilgrimage and tourism. As the papers in this collection demonstrate, studies of these forms of journeying are at the forefront of postmodern debates about movement and centers, global flows, social identities, and the negotiation of meanings.
