Making Music On The Organ written by Peter Hurford and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1990 with Organ categories.

With the first publication of this book in hardcover in 1988, Peter Hurford, acclaimed for his performances and recordings, demonstrated his ability to communicate to professionals, amateurs, and general listeners the ideas that underpin his performance and teaching. Making Music on the Organ sets out the relation of both the instrument and the performer to the world of music at large, gives authoritative advice on technical problems, and describes the workings of the instrument itself. The chapters on interpretation, with particular emphasis on the music of J.S. Bach, are invaluable, arising from the author's own lifelong dedication to the performance of Bach's music. For this revised edition, the author has made a number of textual emendations and additions and has included new material on the principles of good organ design and the history and use of the swell-box, and a useful summary of temperament.

Twentieth Century Organ Music written by Christopher S. Anderson and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-06-17 with Music categories.

This volume explores twentieth-century organ music through in-depth studies of the principal centers of composition, the most significant composers and their works, and the evolving role of the instrument and its music. The twentieth-century was a time of unprecedented change for organ music, not only in its composition and performance but also in the standards of instrument design and building. Organ music was anything but immune to the complex musical, intellectual, and socio-political climate of the time. Twentieth-Century Organ Music examines the organ's repertory from the entire period, contextualizing it against the background of important social and cultural trends. In a collection of twelve essays, experienced scholars survey the dominant geographic centers of organ music (France, the Netherlands, Scandinavia, the United States, and German-speaking countries) and investigate the composers who made important contributions to the repertory (Reger in Germany, Messiaen in France, Ligeti in Eastern and Central Europe, Howells in Great Britain). Twentieth-Century Organ Music provides a fresh vantage point from which to view one of the twentieth century's most diverse and engaging musical spheres.

The City of Erie, Pennsylvania has a long history in the art of pipe organ and piano design and manufacturing. Beginning in the mid 1800's the Erie became a magnet for hundreds of immigrant craftsmen skilled in these fields and anxious to build a better life in the New World. Local businessmen quickly grasped what was transpiring and eagerly financed many of these people in setting up organ and piano factories realizing that this was a necessary albeit unusual manufacturing field in the developing New World. History has proven them to be visionaries. Since those early days and up to this very day, Erie has always been regarded as the epicenter if the pipe organ industry in North America. Although there are no longer any piano manufacturers in the City that industry too, played a large and important role in the growth of the City as well as on the world music scene. This book chronicles the history of each of those industries in Erie, their locations and the personalities and their families who were involved with each company. Readers will learn how an Erie organ company saved the world's original snack food 'Cracker Jack' from oblivion. Learn also, about several other prominent individuals whose highly successful careers in pipe organ industry were launched in Erie. With this profusely illustrated book one is able to tour around the City and identify many of the buildings that these proud industries once occupied, some with their engraved granite keystones still intact. Many of the beautiful instruments that were hand crafted in those early days are still functioning and serving in churches, synagogues, temples, universities and music venues around the world. Much of what the reader will find in this book has never before been documented. It is the author's hope that this effort will preclude this history from otherwise being lost to time.

Keyboard improvisation is often considered the domain of the musical genius, a perception created no doubt by masters from Bach and Mozart to Liszt. The capacity to express one's musical thoughts spontaneously and coherently, however, presumes neither a virtuosic command of the instrument nor a sublime command of compositional theory. Assuming only an elementary background in harmony, each of Overduin's 32 lessons focuses on a specific harmonic, melodic, or structural topic designed to provoke experimentation and to develop improvisatory skills, starting with simple melodies and improvising on one or two chords. Subsequent exercises expand the harmonic vocabulary and incorporate a range of techniques including variation, ostinato, sequence, ornamentation, and figuration. Written in an engaging style and featuring numerous accessible musical exercises, Making Music is the ideal introduction to this essential skill.
