In East Asia’s largest cities, hundreds of thousands of women remain single into middle age and beyond, giving rise to a demographic transformation with profound implications for their societies. Labeled in the media as “loser dogs” and “parasites” in Japan and “leftover women” in mainland China and Hong Kong, single women in East Asia are criticized for being choosy, selfish, and overly independent. Based on ethnographic research and interviews with more than a hundred single women in Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Tokyo, Making Our Own Destiny is the first study to comprehensively compare the views and experiences of single women living in these three great cities—cities that stand at the forefront of the region’s movement toward later marriage and rising singlehood. This well-researched book explores how single women attempt to take advantage of unprecedented opportunities for success in education and work while navigating marriage and family expectations. Unlike their counterparts in Europe and North America, many do not have romantic partners and most do not have children. What do these women want? How do they see themselves and their place in society? What are their values, goals, and dreams? As they work to balance opportunities with expectations, single women in urban East Asia find themselves deeply embedded in the caregiving systems of their societies. In Shanghai, author Lynne Nakano finds single women rushing to marry to enter intergenerational relationships of care. In Hong Kong, they consider the risks of marriage as they tend to the needs of natal and extended families. In Tokyo, many single women hope to marry to have children while others find a place for themselves in their families as elder caregivers. Nakano’s intimate portrayals not only expose meticulously planned family strategies gone awry, engagements broken, and careers abandoned, but also highlight the experiences of women embracing the joys of remaining single. Hers is a fascinating study of modern women finding meaning in their lives while offering an insightful glimpse into the future of urban families in an age of low fertility and long transitions into adulthood.

NEW YORK TIMES, USA TODAY, and PUBLISHERS WEEKLY BESTSELLER “Full of valuable insights to guide you.”—WILL SMITH “Thoughtful and life-affirming . . . a must-read.”—TONY ROBBINS “This book will put you back in charge of your own life.”—TOM BRADY A new perspective on the overused and misunderstood concept of “karma” that offers the key to happiness and enlightenment, from the world-renowned spiritual master Sadhguru. What is karma? Most people understand karma as a balance sheet of good and bad deeds, virtues and sins. The mechanism that decrees that we cannot evade the consequences of our own actions. In reality, karma has nothing to do with reward and punishment. Karma simply means action: your action, your responsibility. It isn’t some external system of crime and punishment, but an internal cycle generated by you. Accumulation of karma is determined only by your intention and the way you respond to what is happening to you. Over time, it’s possible to become ensnared by your own unconscious patterns of behavior. In Karma, Sadhguru seeks to put you back in the driver’s seat, turning you from a terror-struck passenger to a confident driver navigating the course of your own destiny. By living consciously and fully inhabiting each moment, you can free yourself from the cycle. Karma is an exploration and a manual, restoring our understanding of karma to its original potential for freedom and empowerment instead of a source of entanglement. Through Sadhguru’s teachings, you will learn how to live intelligently and joyfully in a challenging world.

In Democracy Remixed, award-winning scholar Cathy J. Cohen offers an authoritative and empirically powerful analysis of the state of black youth in America today. Utilizing the results from the Black Youth Project, a groundbreaking nationwide survey, Cohen focuses on what young Black Americans actually experience and think--and underscores the political repercussions. Featuring stories from cities across the country, she reveals that black youth want, in large part, what most Americans want--a good job, a fulfilling life, safety, respect, and equality. But while this generation has much in common with the rest of America, they also believe that equality does not yet exist, at least not in their lives. Many believe that they are treated as second-class citizens. Moreover, for many the future seems bleak when they look at their neighborhoods, their schools, and even their own lives and choices. Through their words, these young people provide a complex and balanced picture of the intersection of opportunity and discrimination in their lives. Democracy Remixed provides the insight we need to transform the future of young Black Americans and American democracy.

This book is an exploration of the nature of time and reality, challenging our preconceived notions and inviting us to question what we know and believe. Through a series of thought-provoking essays, we will delve into the mysteries of life and death, the wonders of the unknown, and the path to enlightenment. We will begin by examining the nature of time itself. Is it truly a linear progression, or is our perception of time merely an illusion? We will explore the concept of time dilation and its effects on our experience of reality. We will also discuss the cyclical nature of time and the idea that the past, present, and future are all interconnected. Next, we will turn our attention to the nature of reality. What is real and what is not? How do we know what is true? We will explore the role of perception and the influence of our beliefs on our understanding of the world around us. We will also discuss the concept of alternate realities and the possibility that there is more to existence than we can currently comprehend. As we delve deeper into these topics, we will encounter the interplay of fate and choice. Are our lives predetermined, or do we have the power to shape our own destinies? We will explore the concept of free will and the role of personal responsibility. We will also discuss the ripple effects of our decisions and the ways in which our choices can impact the world around us. No exploration of time and reality would be complete without a discussion of consciousness. What is consciousness and how does it arise? Is it a product of the brain or something more? We will explore the nature of self and the interconnectedness of all things. We will also discuss the potential for human consciousness to expand and evolve. Finally, we will conclude our journey with a discussion of the art of living. How can we make the most of our time on Earth? How can we find meaning and purpose in our lives? We will explore the importance of embracing the present moment, cultivating gratitude, and connecting with others. We will also discuss the legacy we leave behind and the ways in which we can make a positive impact on the world. This book is an invitation to embark on an intellectual and spiritual adventure. It is an opportunity to question your beliefs, expand your mind, and gain a fresh perspective on the world around you. As we navigate the complexities of time and reality, we may just discover that the truth is far more extraordinary than we ever imagined. If you like this book, write a review!
