Do you struggle with making project management work in your organization? Do you lose sleep because your project is out of control? In this paper, we look at some of the common complaints project managers have about their organizations, and how to overcome these problems. Based on answers from a survey of project managers, the paper lists the problem areas in implementing project management in organizations and identifies possible solutions to these problems. The eight largest categories are addressed in this paper: (1) no work breakdown structure (WBS); (2) poor or no project charter; (3) padding or poor estimating; (4) scope creep or lack of change management; (5) lack of prioritization across projects; (6) no repeatable processes; (7) no time for proper planning; and, (8) no time to close projects. The paper addresses these categories, presents some general strategies for gaining organizational buy-in, and discusses the ways to implement strategies.
