Breeding fine horses has been both big business and pastime for Middle Tennesseans since settlers first entered the Cumberland Valley during the American Revolution. The fertile pastures and mild climate of the area lent itself to horse breeding, and the populace embraced the benefits. Horses functioned as the technology that plowed fields, moved goods and people, and serviced the military. Horse racetracks dotted the landscape, and a person’s social status sometimes rested on the possession of fine horses and good horsemanship. This combination of culture and geography in Middle Tennessee gave rise to some of the most celebrated horse breeders in the nation.

From the homes of the first settlers in Middle Tennessee to Gallatin's public square and everywhere in between, there is not a more haunted county in America. The Winchesters' unique and architecturally impressive Cragfont had mysterious occurrences from its very beginnings in the late 1700s. Gallatin's public square, its courthouse, loft apartments and places of business have hauntings that seem to specifically point to restless spirits still unsettled from the oppressive days of Civil War occupation by a brutal commanding officer of the Union army. Even the modern subdivisions are not immune to the supernatural, hosting everything from flying cryptids to tormented spirit-remnants of the bloody conflict between settlers and Native Americans. Author Donna Lyn Hartley details the spooky side of Sumner County.

Benjamin Franklin Cheatham was a Nashville native and a descendant of the city's founder, James Robertson. Born in 1820, he achieved fame through his military service in the Mexican War and, especially, the Civil War. After the war Cheatham farmed, ran for Congress, and, at the time of his death in 1866, was postmaster of Nashville. Cheatham was one of Nashville's most popular sons, and his funeral, which drew some thirty thousand people, was reportedly the largest ever held in the city.

James Monroe written by Tim McGrath and has been published by Penguin this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-05-05 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

The extraordinary life of James Monroe: soldier, senator, diplomat, and the last Founding Father to hold the presidency, a man who helped transform thirteen colonies into a vibrant and mighty republic. “A first-rate account of a remarkable life.” —Jon Meacham, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Soul of America Monroe lived a life defined by revolutions. From the battlefields of the War for Independence, to his ambassadorship in Paris in the days of the guillotine, to his own role in the creation of Congress's partisan divide, he was a man who embodied the restless spirit of the age. He was never one to back down from a fight, whether it be with Alexander Hamilton, with whom he nearly engaged in a duel (prevented, ironically, by Aaron Burr), or George Washington, his hero turned political opponent. This magnificent new biography vividly recreates the epic sweep of Monroe’s life: his near-death wounding at Trenton and a brutal winter at Valley Forge; his pivotal negotiations with France over the Louisiana Purchase; his deep, complex friendships with Thomas Jefferson and James Madison; his valiant leadership when the British ransacked the nation’s capital and burned down the Executive Mansion; and Monroe’s lifelong struggle to reckon with his own complicity in slavery. Elected the fifth president of the United States in 1816, this fiercest of partisans sought to bridge divisions and sow unity, calming turbulent political seas and inheriting Washington's mantle of placing country above party. Over his two terms, Monroe transformed the nation, strengthening American power both at home and abroad. Critically acclaimed author Tim McGrath has consulted an extensive array of primary sources, many rarely seen since Monroe's own time, to conjure up this fascinating portrait of an essential American statesman and president.
