The Bible has played a critical role in the story of Judaism, modernity, and identity. Penny Schine Gold examines the arena of children's education and the role of the Bible in the reshaping of Jewish identity, especially in the United States in the 1920s and 1930s, when a second generation of Eastern European Jews engaged the task of Americanizing Jewish culture, religion, and institutions. Professional Jewish educators based in the Reform movement undertook a multifaceted agenda for the Bible in America: to modernize it, harmonize it with American values, and move it to the center of the religious school curriculum. Through public schooling, the children of Jewish immigrants brought America home; it was up to the adults to fashion a Judaism that their children could take back out into America. Because of its historic role in the development of Judaism and its cultural significance in American life, Gold finds, the Bible provided Jews with vital links to both the past and the present. The ancient sacred text of the Bible, transformed into highly abridged and amended "Bible tales," was brought into service as a bridge between tradition and modernity.Gold analyzes these American developments with reference to the intellectual history of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Europe, innovations in public schooling and social theory, Protestant religious education, and later versions of children's Bibles in the United States and Israel. She shows that these seemingly simple children's books are complex markers of the pressing concerns of Jews in the modern world.

The Making Of The Modern Jewish Bible written by Alan T. Levenson and has been published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011 with History categories.

Tracing its history from Moses Mendelssohn to today, Alan Levenson explores the factors that shaped what is the modern Jewish Bible and its centrality in Jewish life today. The Making of the Modern Jewish Bible explains how Jewish translators, commentators, and scholars made the Bible a keystone of Jewish life in Germany, Israel and America. Levenson argues that German Jews created a religious Bible, Israeli Jews a national Bible, and American Jews an ethnic one. In each site, scholars wrestled with the demands of the non-Jewish environment and their own indigenous traditions, trying to balance fidelity and independence from the commentaries of the rabbinic and medieval world.

Excerpt from The Bible in the Making: In the Light of Modern Research How the recently a thoughtful, devout lay Church man said to the writer, I never read form. The the Old Testament now, as I feel that Bible' the results of modern scholarship have entirely upset for me its foundations as an inspired book. This is a very dangerous misunderstanding and unfortunately a widespread one. It is futile to hide our heads in the sand and imagine that people are not disturbed about it. And it is equally futile to decry the critical studies which have caused the disturbance. For our best Chris tian scholars are now agreed that the main central results of critical scholarship have come to stay. Excerpt from The Bible and Modern Life IT is the purpose of this book to suggest a type of Bible study fitted to the needs of modern times. Bible study to many people is a dreary business. It seems far away from the com mon vital interests of humanity. Those who have made any thoroughgoing study of the Bible, however, know that it takes hold upon the realities, the common tasks, and the deep human loyalties in which men and women live and move and have their being. Should not, therefore, the Christian Scrip tures, both through courses of study and methods of organization, be treated natu rally, scholarly, sensibly, practically, and always in relation to real life and conduct? Modern scholarship is ministering greatly to the study of the Scriptures; it is helping to make the Bible real, not by making it less divine, but more human, more intelligent, preface more capable of sustaining faith In the liv ing God. Making Sense Of New Testament Theology written by A K M Adam and has been published by Wipf and Stock Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-01-07 with Religion categories.

Critics have tried to revitalize the discipline of New Testament theology. The results of their labors are often disappointing. A. K. M. Adam suggests the problems many sense in New Testament theology arise from a mismatch of method and goals. That mismatch stems from a preoccupation with modernity as resident in the hallowed halls of regnant historical criticism. We need a hermeneutics of theology, a hermeneutics of hermeneutics. Adam here helps us understand what to keep of the historical-critical perspective when the realization hits that we have been sold a bill of goods that no longer makes good on its promises. In that sense, Adam's book is far more friendly to the historical-critical method as such than unfriendly (editor's preface).
