This dual biography of Malcolm X and Martin Luther King upends longstanding preconceptions to transform our understanding of the twentieth century's most iconic African American leaders. To most Americans, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. represent contrasting ideals: self-defense vs. nonviolence, black power vs. civil rights, the sword vs. the shield. The struggle for black freedom is wrought with the same contrasts. While nonviolent direct action is remembered as an unassailable part of American democracy, the movement's militancy is either vilified or erased outright. In The Sword and the Shield, Peniel E. Joseph upends these misconceptions and reveals a nuanced portrait of two men who, despite markedly different backgrounds, inspired and pushed each other throughout their adult lives. This is a strikingly revisionist biography, not only of Malcolm and Martin, but also of the movement and era they came to define.

This book is comprised of sixteen articles written by Elijah Muhammad in the Nation of Islam's official Newspaper, Muhammad Speaks, beginning May, 1973. What had previously been known as Ezekiel's Wheel or his vision of the wheel, was in fact called The Mother Plane, because it is today in fact, not visions, a humanly built planet, or the "mother" of all planes, so teaches Elijah Muhammad. The bible's Ezekiel did not see an actual wheel, but only a vision of one that would be in the future. This book analyzes Ezekiel's vision and brings it to bear with what Elijah Muhammad says that God taught him about it. What's called "UFO's today is in fact the wheel which eludes the scientists of this world. Elijah Muhammad interprets Ezekiel's Wheel in modern terms.

These were the crimes that were meant to change the world, and sometimes did. The book connects the killing of the Kennedys or the murder that sparked the First World War with less well-known stories, such as the Berlin shooting of an instigator of the Armenian genocide or the attack on an American 'robber baron'. Taking in Malcolm X and Queen Victoria, Adolf Hitler and Andy Warhol, Charles Manson and Emma Goldman, Tsars, Presidents, and pop stars, Age of Assassins traces the process that turned thought into action and murder into an icon. In tackling the history of political violence, the book is unique in its range and attention to detail, summoning up an age of assassination that is far from over.

Defining photography is impossible. Revealing it is another matter, and that's what The Concise Focal Encyclopedia of Photography does, with each turn of the page. History: The technical origins and evolution of photography are half of the story. The other half consists of the ways that cultural forces have transformed photography into a constellation of practices more diverse than any other mode of representation. Photographers can tell a more in-depth story through a photo like Dorothea Lange's "Migrant Mother than a journalist ever could with the written word alone. Major themes and practitioners: Over 25 entries, many with supporting illustrations, examine the figures, trends, and ideas that have contributed most heavily to the history and current state of photography. Contemporary issues: The issues influencing photography today are more complex than at any other time in its history. Questions of ethics, desire, perception, digitization, and commercialization all vie for attention. Hear what the experts have to say about crucial issues such as whether or not the images we take today will last the test of time, and if so, how? When material is covered this skillfully, "concise is no compromise. The Concise Focal Encyclopedia of Photography is packed with useful information, compelling ideas, and - best of all - pure pleasure.

*Includes pictures of King, Malcolm X, and important people, places, and events in their lives. *Explains the origins of Malcolm X's name and Martin Luther King Jr.'s name. *Includes a bibliography of King for further reading. Today, a man born Michael King Jr. is one of the most famous Americans in history, his name having been changed at the age of 5 to one the world fondly remembers: Martin Luther King Jr. The life and legend of Dr. King have been told to every American, many of whom come away equating King with the Civil Rights Movement as a whole. But King's life was about far more than leading movements and having dreams. At the height of the Civil Rights Movement, while much of the nation's attention was given to peaceful protests, boycotts, and figures like Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr., a young man named Malcolm Little was rising through the ranks to become one of the leaders of the Nation of Islam. As Malcolm X, he would come to be one of the most controversial figures in 20th century America, hailed as a bold civil rights activist by some and reviled as a violent racist by others. What everyone can agree on, however, is that Malcolm X was one of the most influential black leaders of the 20th century. As the two biggest leaders of their respective civil rights movements, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. battled for the hearts and minds of Americans, and they even battled against each other, with Malcolm X famously calling King a "chump" and King referring to Malcolm's message as "fiery, demagogic oratory." Faces of the Civil Rights Movement chronicles the lives of these two leaders, whose different ideologies made them advocate vastly different approaches in pursuit of a common goal. This ebook also humanizes the two leaders, both of whom wanted to follow in the footsteps of their fathers, both of whom became leaders of their movements, and both of whom had notorious shortcomings. Along the way, you will learn things about Malcolm X and Dr. King you never knew, including the origins of their names, how they reached their positions, a bitterly contested court case over some of King's papers, and the off-the-cuff origins of King's I Have a Dream speech. Along with pictures of the important people, places, and events in his life, you will learn about Dr. King and Malcolm X like you never have before, in no time at all.

Big Red S Mercy written by Mark Hertsgaard and has been published by Simon and Schuster this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-05-07 with Social Science categories.

The moving story of a New Orleans woman who fought for justice and her community even amidst one of the city's darkest moments. Mark Hertsgaard and Deborah Cotton were strangers to one another, united only by a love of jazz and New Orlean’s distinctive Second Line tradition. And then, during a Mother’s Day parade, they were thrown together when two gunmen fired into the crowd… Deborah Cotton—known to all as Big Red—was among the most grievously injured. She is the driving force of this deeply reported parable of two of America’s most deeply rooted issues. A racial justice activist in her forties who was born to a Black father and a white mother, Cotton was one of twenty people—including the author—shot in the biggest mass shooting in the modern history of New Orleans. Once one of the largest slave ports, the city has long been a vortex of violence and racism. From her apparent deathbed, Big Red shocked observers by urging mercy for two young Black men accused of the attack. “Racism can kill Black people even when a Black finger pulls the trigger,” she tells Hertsgaard, who, she later said, is “called” to investigate what actually happened, and why. Charismatic, complicated, and struck down in her prime, Big Red and her heroic life will captivate readers. In the wake of the shooting, she never stopped fighting as she sought to get to the core of this uniquely American maelstrom. Big Red's Mercy is an illuminating narrative that provides a human and unflinching look at modern America.
