Defining male envy as "the hostility males feel for other males," the author explores how envy, while a taboo topic in everyday life, has (from the Romantic period onward) been given a thorough treatment by literature and looks at what that treatment reveals about the role of envy in competition, warfare, and civilization. Discussing works ranging from Ivanhoe to The Shining he looks at envy as a coded subtext inherent in a vast range of human conflict. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Envy written by Joseph Epstein and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-08-28 with Humor categories.

Malice that cannot speak its name, cold-blooded but secret hostility, impotent desire, hidden rancor and spite--all cluster at the center of envy. Envy clouds thought, writes Joseph Epstein, clobbers generosity, precludes any hope of serenity, and ends in shriveling the heart. Of the seven deadly sins, he concludes, only envy is no fun at all.Writing in a conversational, erudite, self-deprecating style that wears its learning lightly, Epstein takes us on a stimulating tour of the many faces of envy. He considers what great thinkers--such as John Rawls, Schopenhauer, and Nietzsche--have written about envy; distinguishes between envy, yearning, jealousy, resentment, and schadenfreude ("a hardy perennial in the weedy garden of sour emotions"); and catalogs the many things that are enviable, including wealth, beauty, power, talent, knowledge and wisdom, extraordinary good luck, and youth (or as the title of Epstein's chapter on youth has it, "The Young, God Damn Them"). He looks at resentment in academia, where envy is mixed with snobbery, stirred by impotence, and played out against a background of cosmic injustice; and he offers a brilliant reading of Othello as a play more driven by Iago's envy than Othello's jealousy. He reveals that envy has a strong touch of malice behind it--the envious want to destroy the happiness of others. He suggests that envy of the astonishing success of Jews in Germany and Austria may have lurked behind the virulent anti-Semitism of the Nazis. As he proved in his best-selling Snobbery, Joseph Epstein has an unmatched ability to highlight our failings in a way that is thoughtful, provocative, and entertaining. If envy is no fun, Epstein's Envy is truly a joy to read.

Male Jealousy written by Louis Lo and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-03-08 with Literary Criticism categories.

Male Jealousy: Literature and Film is a critical and cultural theory-based study of male jealousy in western culture and its connections with paranoia. By tracing the meanings of jealousy and the representation of jealous men (married or unmarried, heterosexual or homosexual), Lo argues that jealousy is promoted within patriarchy and within what Derrida characterises as logocentricism, where to love is the desire to be loved, and where love cannot be guaranteed in any form of sexual relationship. Contrasting the difference between jealousy and its closely linked concept, envy, this book explores the economy of possession and its relationship to the body, and argues, controversially, that jealousy is an even more modern concept than envy. Informed by critical theory, engaging in particular with Derrida, Deleuze, Freud, Lacan and Kristeva, the study offers close readings of key works by Cervantes, Shakespeare, Proust, Buñuel, Vidor and Almodóvar, in which a spectrum of different forms of jealousy are portrayed.

The first volume of its kind, this edited collection brings together classic texts in the history of psychoanalysis and developing theory to examine gender and envy. Bringing to light the ways in which our preoccupation with the Freudian concept of penis envy has both revealed and obscured fundamental psychological insights, the essays also form bridges across many disciplines and schools of psychological thought. From foundational works by Freud, Klein, and Horney to the current scholarship of Fast, Torok and Friedman, Gender and Envy brings together a library of critical thinking on the ongoing discussion of envy, gender and psychoanalysis.

Masculine Jealousy and Contemporary Cinema provides new insights into the relationship between masculinity and jealousy through the study of representations of male jealousy in contemporary Hollywood cinema. It argues that male jealousy has played a key role in the psycho-cultural shaping of Western masculinities and male fantasy, and this is explored through case studies of films and their reception in the press. The book will interest graduates, postgraduates and researchers exploring theories of masculinity and jealousy, cinematic theories of representation, stardom and spectatorship.

Envy Is Not Innate written by Patricia Polledri and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-06-14 with Psychology categories.

This book is a comprehensive revision of the notion of envy, suggesting that envy is not innate and proposing some fresh ideas about its relation to psychopathology. Its argument is that envy is not simply attributable to constitutional forces, as Melanie Klein proposed, but the outcome of a complex process that includes a disturbance in symbolic functioning. This is the first time a critical review has been undertaken in book from of this cornerstone of British psychoanalysis. As the concept of envy needs to be explored in the light of attachment theory, an important aim of this book is in bridging attachment theory and classic psychoanalytic understanding of severe psychopathology. It also offers, for the first time, not only a reconceptualisation of the notion of envy, but a working model of development which is highly relevant to clinical practice. This model incorporates recent findings from neuroscience, which indicate that environmental influences are of prime importance to infantile development, and that disturbed attachments result in anatomical, physiological and psychological developmental disturbances.

Jealousy and envy permeate the practice of psychoanalytic and psychotherapeutic work. New experience and new relevance of old but neglected ideas about these two feeling states and their origins warrant special attention, both as to theory and practice. Their great complexity and multilayered nature are highlighted by a number of contributions: the very early inception of the "triangular" jealousy situations; the prominence of womb envy and hatred against femininity rooted in the envy of female procreativity; the role of shame and the core of both affects; the massive effects of the embodiment of these feelings in the conscience (i.e., the envious and resentful attacks by the "inner judge" against the self); the attempt to construct a cultic system of sacrifices the would countermand womb envy by an all-male cast of killing, rebirth, redemption, and blissful nourishment; and finally, the projection of envy, jealousy, and their context of shame and self-condemnation in the form of the Evil Eye. Taken together, the contributions to the stunning and insightful volume form a broad spectrum of new insights into the dynamics of two central emotions of rivalry and their clinical and cultural relevance and application.
