First published in 1994, Male Violence examines male violence as the major source of human suffering from a wide range of perspectives. This book contains accessible contributions from a wide range of psychologists who have studied the many faces of male violence: in childhood and adulthood; on the street and in the home; towards men, women and children; and in its sexual and non-sexual forms. These varied topics, together with an emphasis on naturalistic rather than laboratory-based investigations, distinguish these researchers from those aiming to make generalizations about human aggression without considering the issues of sex and gender. In doing so, Male Violence raises fundamental questions about values which are accepted and unchallenged by the majority of people living in the modern world. This book will be of interest to students of psychology, sociology, and gender studies.

What Causes Men S Violence Against Women written by Michele Harway and has been published by SAGE this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999-09-09 with Family & Relationships categories.

Carefully organized and tightly edited, this insightful book considers potential causes of men's violence against women, utilizing a variety of theoretical perspectives. It summarizes what is known about the multiple causes of men's violence against women and the importance of identifying men's risk factors in order to prevent future violence. The editors' approach is unique but systematic. In chapter 2, the editors present a preliminary multivariate model that explains men's violence against women by identifying four content areas: macrosocietal, biological, gender role socialization, and relation factors. Within these four areas, the editors develop thirteen preliminary hypotheses about the causes of men's violence against women. In the subsequent chapters the contributing authors critique or react to specific parts of the multivariate model and address one or more of the 13 hypotheses in the presentation of their own ideas about the causes of men's violence against women. In the concluding chapter, the editors summarize the contributors' reactions to the original hypotheses by creating a revised multivariate model of risk factors for men's violence against women. The final model includes biological, socialization, psychological, psychosocial, relational, and macrosocietal factors. Furthermore, the model is explained through 13 theoretical propositions, 40 research hypotheses, and over 60 risk variables related to men's violence against women. The book closes with a discussion of men's protective, resiliency, and vulnerability factors as well as future directions for theory development, advocacy, and the prevention of violence against women.

Chapters explore the differences and similarities of policing practices in western societies at the time surrounding the book’s original publication.

"How Capitalism Underdeveloped Black America is one of those paradigm-shifting, life-changing texts that has not lost its currency or relevance—even after three decades. Its provocative treatise on the ravages of late capitalism, state violence, incarceration, and patriarchy on the life chances and struggles of black working-class men and women shaped an entire generation, directing our energies to the terrain of the prison-industrial complex, anti-racist work, labor organizing, alternatives to racial capitalism, and challenging patriarchy—personally and politically."—Robin D. G. Kelley "In this new edition of his classic text . . . Marable can challenge a new generation to find solutions to the problems that constrain the present but not our potential to seek and define a better future."—Henry Louis Gates, Jr. "[A] prescient analysis."—Michael Eric Dyson How Capitalism Underdeveloped Black America is a classic study of the intersection of racism and class in the United States. It has become a standard text for courses in American politics and history, and has been central to the education of thousands of political activists since the 1980s. This edition is prsented with a new foreword by Leith Mullings.

Male and Female Violence in Popular Media brings into focus the apparently symmetrical phenomena of men's violence against women and women's violence against men, explaining the profound differences in their actual features as well as in their representations, which over the last few years have been proliferating in a vast array of global media contents. Elisa Giomi and Sveva Magaraggia consider popular media including crime TV series such as The Killing (Denmark, 2007- 2012), The Fall (UK, 2013-2016) and True Detective (USA, 2015), factual entertainment such as Who the (bleep) Did I Marry? (Investigation Discovery, 2010-2015), and Italian pop music in order to examine popular culture's depictions of men and women in their opposite, yet complementary, roles of perpetrators and victims. They reveal how TV shows, pop-songs, news and commercials that populate global audiences' daily life fuel false beliefs about love and sexuality that either legitimate or stigmatise violence depending on the perpetrators and victims' gender.
