São Paulo Museum of Modern Art celebrates its seventy years with an exhibition that highlights the institution's core values. From the outset, MAM sought to form a collection through prospective exhibits, develop a pedagogical practice, expand the field of photography as art, and anticipate the direction of future artistic trends. Now, we revisit these four principles to look forward from a history already consolidated in Brazil and abroad.MAM's trajectory also shows the fertility of its foundations, which gave rise to institutions such as the Museum of Contemporary Art at the University of São Paulo. Founded in 1963, MAC USP received the MAM-formed collection and maintained its seminal values. Both museums are united in this commemorative exhibition. The show is organized in two parts. In the Paulo Figueiredo Room there are works collected during the initial period of MAM, between 1949 and 1963. In the Great Room, there are works from the MAM and MAC USP collections acquired after that date. Connecting both rooms, is a historic timeline.

The first major retrospective, the exhibition displays about 700 works from the Museum's 4500 piece collection of contemporary art in Brazil. The collection represents the efforts to collect current and emerging art/artists that began a big push in 1995 when the museum had 2000 pieces. against more than the 4,500 congregated today. Great talents had been discovered and promoted for the museum, such as the photographers Caio Reisewitz, Mauro Restiffe e Márcia Xavier. The artists selected were at the time the vanguard, those who did not fall into the established art scene. among those are: Nelson Leirner, Pablo Buennos, Vik Muniz, Oswald Goeldi, Waltrécio Caldas, Miguel Rio Branco and Gustavo Rezende. It occupies four floors of the Oca building each divided into chronological order.

Exhibition that commemorates the 60th anniversary of Sao Paulo's Museum of Modern Art (Museu de Arte Moderna, MAM) in an event that explores the relationship between modern and contemporary art through an historic retrospective of the collection of this cultural space inaugurated in 1948. The exhibit described by curator Felipe Chaimovich in his essay "De Volta a Óca" as "the structure of the exhibition proposes a visit to MAM's complex past: changes of direction, loss of collection, reinvention at itself and the construction of a contemporary identity"--p. 12, takes an unusual look at the institution and its cultural role in Brazilian culture despite critical times. Flávio de Carvalho and Alfredo Volpi were the 2 artists selected central figures of the show, accompanied by Lívio Abramo, Waltercio Caldas, Almir Mavignier, Mira Schendel, Leonilson, León Ferrari, Geraldo de Barros, and others.The event was organized in honor of artist Frans Krajcberg, whose artwork is motivated by the and towards the preservation of the environment and the stop to the devastation of the Amazonian forests.

Art produced outside hegemonic centers is often seen as a form of derivation or relegated to a provisional status. Forming Abstraction turns this narrative on its head. In the first book-length study of postwar Brazilian art and culture, Adele Nelson highlights the importance of exhibitionary and pedagogical institutions in the development of abstract art in Brazil. By focusing on the formation of the São Paulo Biennial in 1951; the early activities of artists Geraldo de Barros, Lygia Clark, Waldemar Cordeiro, Hélio Oiticica, Lygia Pape, and Ivan Serpa; and the ideas of critics like Mário Pedrosa, Nelson illuminates the complex, strategic processes of citation and adaption of both local and international forms. The book ultimately demonstrates that Brazilian art institutions and abstract artistic groups—and their exhibitions of abstract art in particular—served as crucial loci for the articulation of societal identities in a newly democratic nation at the onset of the Cold War.
