La pratica dell'allattamento si sta diffondendo grazie a iniziative e interventi per la sua promozione; sono quindi sempre di più le donne che allattano secondo le raccomandazioni dell'Organizzazione Mondiale della Sanità, ovvero fino a due anni di vita del bambino e anche oltre. C'è una bella differenza fra allattare un neonato e allattare un bambino di uno, due o più anni ma non sempre si riesce a trovare su questo argomento specifico informazioni coerenti e aggiornate. Oltre a non trovare risposte soddisfacenti ai tanti, inevitabili dubbi, le madri che allattano un bambino di età intorno o superiore all'anno spesso si sentono isolate e non hanno occasione di scambiare opinioni ed esperienze sull'argomento. Spesso si scontrano con la disapprovazione e l'ignoranza di chi le circonda, fatta di luoghi comuni come quello secondo cui ad un certo punto "il latte diventa acqua". Chi ha il diritto di decidere sulla sua durata? Su quali basi? Cosa vuol dire, oggi, allattare fino all'anno e molto oltre, e cosa comporta per la madre, per il padre e per il bambino? È vero che un allattamento prolungato rende le madri succubi dei figli, e questi ultimi dipendenti, viziati e mammoni? Ma soprattutto, perché molte persone si sentono in diritto di dire alla madre quello che deve fare in merito all'allattamento, in tante situazioni diverse e anche senza che venga richiesta la loro opinione in merito? Opera da anni in associazioni come MAMI e IBFAN Italia (di dui e presidente), in attività di sostegno, promozione e protezione dell’allattamento. Si occupa inoltre di decrescita e di alimentazione.
