Memoirs of Silberzweig (1917-2004), born in Warsaw to an affluent Jewish family, the youngest of seven siblings. Pp. 17-92 relate his experiences in the Holocaust. One brother managed to emigrate to the U.S. before the war. Silberzweig and the rest of the family were interned in the ghetto, but his father and four of his siblings, with their families, were deported and killed. Silberzweig met his future wife, Gittel Rosen, and also joined a resistance group. He participated in the ghetto uprising and was then sent to Majdanek. His mother had died on the train, but his brother and Rosen arrived at Majdanek, and the three were later sent to Auschwitz. In January 1945 Silberzweig was sent on a death march and transport, from which he escaped just before the liberation. After the war he worked for the American forces, and found that his brother had perished. He was reunited with Rosen, and the two emigrated with their daughter to the U.S. in 1949.

It'll be all right was Mom's phrase. And of course, she was usually right, but we wouldn't admit it to her. We grew up not thinking about what will come later in our lives. Mom and Dad made things as easy as they could for us. Then it hits you. Will I go to college? What kind of a career do I want? Maybe marriage and the start of a family. Will the marriage last? How do I raise my kids to be responsible people? You turn to your parents for advice, and the first thing they tell you is that it'll be all right. My parents taught us to be kind. Taught us the meaning of respect. Taught us to believe that just maybe we could be or do anything we wanted. They taught us to always care. I just never dreamed the word care would one day be connected to the word giver. I never thought the most rewarding job of my life would be caregiving. Especially for my family. Mom always said, no matter the situation being good or bad, happy or sad...it'll be all right. No truer words were spoken, Mom. I can't begin to explain to anyone the profound emptiness and loss I feel every second of every day because my partner in crime, our little stick of dynamite, my very best friend, my mom is no longer here by my side. But don't worry, Mom, I was listening. You taught your lesson well and you're right...everything will be all right.

Mamas Voice is the product of a middle-aged Christian psychiatrist and mother who journals her life observations and experiences, hoping to pass on some life lessons to her children. What started off as random journaling of thoughts ended up being a published book released as a birthday present for her children. The book is written in a random manner with life lessons ranging from self-esteem, bad habits, addictions, snobbery, conflict, money, selfishness, greed, and codependent relationships through to family dramas. The author attempts to capture some important life lessons with a touch of humor and rawness that depicts the real-life dramas. Both pleasurable and painful life observations and experiences are unapologetically expressed with a rawness that does not coat it with sweet candy. Its about real life seen through the eyes of a mother going through a midlife crisis and questioning most things she had taken for granted. The messages are given as direct instructions to her children in second or third person voices and riddles. The messages are just as random as they entered the authors thoughts. This is a light read for both the middle aged and young, who are questioning a few things in their worldview. Like the philosopher in the book of Ecclesiastes, the author grapples with certain life issues until she finally realizes that she cannot fix the world and she gives up control. The forty-five-year-old author starts off by writing a letter to her thirteen-year-old self and ends the book with her modified version of the Ten Commandments and a futuristic letter to her eighty-five-year-old self.

Japan invades and captures the British colony of Singapore in 1942. All Europeans on the island are being interned. Edward Schirmer, the author’s grandfather, faces a dilemma — he is German but born as a British subject. In a strange stroke of fortune, he finds himself friends with General Tomoyuki Yamashita, the famed ‘Tiger of Malaya’. Seeing the fate of the other Europeans, Edward reluctantly lets the Japanese assume he is a friendly German national — only Yamashita knows otherwise. The secret of his true identity remains between the two men only but when politics removes the protective Yamashita from the picture, betrayal ensues and Edward finds himself in prison, his family scattered. The autobiography then moves on to the true-life account of Edward’s son and the author’s father, Hans Schirmer — a hellish tale of a six year-old boy’s quest for survival, alone on the streets of a war-torn vanquished nation, where everyone is hungry and racial tension is rife, where martial law allows the occupiers to summarily execute at will. Amid the horrors of the post-war years, a young boy learns to live, while witnessing an epic moment in history.
