“That Old Man” “‘That old man. That old man.’ Those were the first words out of your mother’s mouth every evening when I dragged through the door from a long hard day in the field. She was so bitter about our life as sharecroppers, and it was tearing the family apart. I worked from sun up to sun down to take care of my family and provide income for my landlord. The white man don’t work us like mules anymore.” Dad talked, leaning over in his recliner. In a few months he would be seventy nine years old. He reminisced about his life experiences as a sharecropper. The old sharecropper’s steps were getting slower by the day. His oversized head was full of gray curly hair and his thick black eyebrows, I knew as a child, were snow white, but as eye-catching as ever. I moved close to him to make sure he could hear me. "Dad," I asked, “Why didn’t you move north and get away from the south? Why didn’t you take us and move away from the cotton fields of Mississippi for a better life?” He looked up at me, flushed, and he slowly began to tell his story: One day I came home and your mother had packed her things and left for Illinois with all of y’all. I should have seen it coming; she has asked me so many times to pack up and go north, but I refused. I knew times were hard and jobs were scarce in the north because everybody was running there to get away from the cotton fields. She wrote me and begged me for weeks to come to Alton. Folks like us with little or no money didn’t have a telephone back then, so we had to write letters. I was farming with an old broke down tractor that would turn over. One day the landlord came to the field to threaten, to curse, and to blame me for the tractor turning over. Even though he knew the tractor was old and worn out, he continued to blame me. Eventually, I gave in and moved to Alton, Illinois, to keep the family together and to get away from the abuse of that old man. I was in Alton for about five months or so with my wife and three girls at that time, living with my brother and his family. I couldn’t find a job for nothing in the world that paid enough money to support my family. It was the mid-fifties and times were hard, even in the North. That was when Eisenhower was President. I had to drop out of school when I was fifteen to work the fields. I only made it to the fifth grade. Besides farming, the only work experience I had back then was working on a logging camp. I made twenty-five to thirty-five dollars a week on the logging camp minus a dollar and fifty cents a day room and board. I had to quit; I was away from my family six days a week! I only saw them on Sunday and my wife was really unhappy about that. Your mother and I argued a lot because money was so scarce when we were in Alton. I wanted our own place for my family; I didn’t like staying with other folks, even though it was my brother and his family. I have always been an independent man and took care of myself and my family. So, after a few months of being in Alton, I moved back to Mississippi by myself. It was in the spring and time to plant the crop. So, I decided to move back and to give it another try. My landlord was glad to see me return, even though he tried to hide his feelings. That happy kind of a look was all over his face. He refused to buy another tractor for me to work the farm. Trying to work the fields with a broke down tractor was hard. My wife was right, “That old man,” she would often exclaim about the landlord. It’s a wonder I didn’t fall dead to the ground. Your mother refused to move back at first. She stayed in Alton for several more weeks. One day I looked up and my wife, Essie Mae, and my girls were walking in the house. She looked at me and said, “I have to keep the family together.” Even though my wife returned on her own will, she was still unhappy; she continued to complain. One evening a truck came through picking up folks for revival. We got on that truck and went to church. Your mother got save

Pop culture has proven to the public that every superhero has his one weakness, that thing that can bring him to his knees. Little green Martians are susceptible to ray guns. The cat will always go after the canary. Vampires can be felled by garlic and wooden stakes. And Grady Parker…well, he has Evie Allen. For his whole adult life, Evie Allen has hated Grady Parker’s guts. And all the rest of him too, truth be told. But after a night out featuring a Mason jar full of Junior Adams’ grandpappy’s moonshine, a little cow tipping (which is much harder and more dangerous than it sounds), and some snuggling in the back seat of a Jeep, Grady Parker finds himself stuck in Evie’s company. And he’s never been happier. Evie, on the other hand, is not the least bit happy to be stuck with Grady. She has turned hating him into an art form, and when she’s forced to spend time with him, she immediately remembers why she learned to hate him in the first place. One night of law-breaking leads to them doing penance together at Lake Fisher, at the behest of an old man who may or may not have their best interests at heart. Being forced to work at Lake Fisher is something Evie can deal with. But being forced to spend time with Grady? She’s pretty sure that won’t work out. Or will it?

They will each share thoughts about their philosophy of education, daily routines, the things they enjoyed most, the things they would have done differently, books and resources they used, tips for acceleration, etc. The father, Jan Cespedes, who is suffering with terminal cancer, wanted to write this as a legacy book and a tribute to his wife and daughters. Vulnerability and transparency are seen throughout the story of parents who felt inept to take on such a daunting task as the home educating of their daughters and more importantly of the discipleship of their hearts.

Through it all, Millie experiences the thrill of first love while fighting to trust the God she believes has abandoned her. With the power of forgiveness, can Millie finally make her way into the free? Saturated in Southern ambiance and written in the vein of other Southern literary bestsellers, like The Help by Kathryn Stockett and Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter by Tom Franklin, Julie Cantrell has created in Into the Free—now a New York Times bestseller—a story that will sweep you away long after the novel ends. When Mountains Move In a few hours, Millie will say “I do” to Bump Anderson, a man who loves her through and through. But would he love her if he knew the secret she keeps? Millie’s mind is racing and there seems no clear line between right and wrong. Either path leads to pain, and she’ll do anything to protect the ones she loves. So she decides to bury the truth and begin again, helping Bump launch a ranch in the wilds of Colorado. But just when she thinks she’s left her old Mississippi life behind, the facts surface in the most challenging way. That’s when Millie’s grandmother Oka arrives to help. Relying on her age-old Choctaw traditions, Oka teaches Millie the power of second chances. Millie resists, believing redemption is about as likely as moving mountains. But Oka stands strong, modeling forgiveness as the only true path to freedom. Together, Bump, Millie, and Oka fight against all odds to create a sustainable ranch, all while learning that the important lessons of their past can be used to build a beautiful future.

Step back in time and meet everyday people from another era: This edition brings to you the complete collection of hundreds of life stories, incredible vivid testimonies of former slaves from 17 U.S. southern states, including photos of the people being interviewed and their extraordinary narratives. After the end of Civil War in 1865, more than four million slaves were set free. There were several efforts to record the remembrances of the former slaves. The Federal Writers' Project was one such project by the United States federal government to support writers during the Great Depression by asking them to interview and record the myriad stories and experiences of slavery of former slaves. The resulting collection preserved hundreds of life stories from 17 U.S. states that would otherwise have been lost in din of modernity and America's eagerness to deliberately forget the blot on its recent past. Reimagining Narrative Therapy Through Practice Stories And Autoethnography written by Travis Heath and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-06-19 with Psychology categories.

Reimagining Narrative Therapy Through Practice Stories and Autoethnography takes a new pedagogical approach to teaching and learning in contemporary narrative therapy, based in autoethnography and storytelling. The individual client stories aim to paint each therapeutic meeting in such detail that the reader will come to feel as though they actually know the two or more people in the room. This approach moves beyond the standard narrative practice of teaching by transcripts and steps into teaching narrative therapy through autoethnography. The intention of these 'teaching tales' is to offer the reader an opportunity to enter into the very 'heart and soul' of narrative therapy practice, much like reading a novel has you enter into the lives of the characters that inhabit it. This work has been used by the authors in MA and PhD level classrooms, workshops, week-long intensive courses, and conferences around the world, where it has received commendations from both newcomer and veteran narrative therapists. The aim of this book is to introduce narrative therapy and the value of integrating autoethnographic methods to students and new clinicians. It can also serve as a useful tool for advanced teachers of narrative practices. In addition, it will appeal to established clinicians who are curious about narrative therapy (who may be looking to add it to their practice), as well as students and scholars of autoethnography and qualitative inquiry and methods.
